Book Two:The Doom Stone.

Book Two:The Doom Stone. Book Five:Reef of Death. Book Six:Night of the Bat. The Gadget. eISBN: 978-1-935169-66-6. p. cm. Summary: When mutant rats threaten to take over Staten Island, which has become a huge landfill, fourteen-year-old Sarah and her younger brother Mike try to figure out how to stop them.

The rat began biting the man’s ear, tearing at it, digging in violently toward the brain. A half-dozen rats fell onto his shoulders, and began to leap for his eyes. The young mate fell to the deck. Ellis, the youngest mate, ran from the stern toward an open cabin door. He was insane with fright, shouting. Sarah cried out when she saw the captain fall against a railing.

Several rats were inside her pants legs and climbing up her calves and shins. She felt their claws on her skin, digging in-then releasing. Marge threw up her arms, but the rats were already hurtling through the air toward her. They were ferocious beyond hunger as they landed on her head. Digging in-and releasing. Their claws dug in and began ripping the skin off of her face.

Rats-Paul Zindel (audio book). I got it because I think rats are cool. I never knew Paul Zindel as the Pulitzer Prize winning young adult author. Nope, I knew him as the author of a handful of creature features which packed the gore and excitement that most YA horror material lacked ( cough Fear Street cough ).

Paul Zindel Born on Staten Island, New York, Zindel was raised by a single mother who pursued a variety of odd and mostly unsuccessful jobs and took in terminally ill patients to supplement the family income. Due to her eccentricity and restlessness, the mother moved the family from one apartment to another, making it difficult for Zindel to form lasting friendships. As a consequence, the boy lived in the world of his imagination, developing interests in both science and writing. Zindel majored in chemistry at Wagner College on Staten Island, completing both bachelors and masters degrees.

Sarah and her brother have grown up next to the world’s largest garbage dump on Staten Island in New York City.

The city of New York is closing its biggest dump. The people who run the dump, including the father of fifteen-year-old Sarah and ten-year-old Michael, are paving over the entire dump. They will be making that spot into a city park, and the dumping of garbage there will stop. Sarah is worried when they start paving the dump, which is right next to her home. There are dangerous gasses given off by rotting garbage that could cause explosions or something just as deadly. Her father, though, reassures her that everything will be fine.

The dump is almost paved over when the rats start to appear. They are crawling out of toilets in Sarah's neighborhood. They swim by the dozens up through pool filter systems and crawl into cracks in houses. These rats are vicious, too, tearing apart the people who try to stop or to kill them. Sarah and Michael seem to have been spared because they have a pet rat, Surfer, who makes high-pitched chattering noises whenever the dump rats come near them.

Soon the rats are out of control. There seem to be millions of them, and they are smart. They are ambushing those who try to stop them. They have a plan and they have the power of communication. Sarah has done a great deal of research on rats because of her attachment to Surfer, and she thinks she might be able to help the people who are trying to get rid of the rats.

This book was fast-paced and exciting. I liked that Sarah was a strong character who was able to help herself and the entire city. I never felt like I got to know the characters very well, though. Most of them were only briefly in the story and then gone. The story was overly gruesome, too, with rats eating people alive. A final problem I had with the book was that the end seemed a little too simple. Everything was better all of a sudden, but it didn't seem like enough had changed to make it so.

REVIEW
I thought that this book was great it was very exciting and well detailed, it also keep me on my heels the whole timing because I did not know what was going to happen next. My favorite part of the book was at the beginning when the garbage man cleared the town garbage age was ruthlessly attacked and chewed to death.
Recommendations
I think that this book would be great for people who like killing and drama and cant wait for a great ending. This book keeps you waiting till the end and to find out how they come out you have to read to the end. Also I will tell people who like cruel killing and gore to read this book a hundred percent. If you dont like this stuff I am saying then if I was you I would not read this because it would not strike your interest like it did mine.

----I am read the book Rats and here are a few reasons why I like this book. The first reason why I like this book is because out of all the books I have read by this author this has been the best one so far. The second reason is that I can only read books that have action and suspense in them and to enjoy them too. The third reason is that I like books with blood and gore, and trust me this book has loads of that.
The best part of the book is at the beginning. Why? Well because that is the most gruesome part of the whole book. That is when Leroy the person that stays at the dump during the day, was shooting rats with his BB gun, but one day the rats took revenge on him and ate him completely except for the bones.
The conflict and the climax are the best story elements that are in this book. The conflict is that people have noticed an insrease in the rat population recently. I like the conflict in this book because thats when most of the people are getting scared to death by the rats. Also I like how the author expresses the characters emotions when they do get scared. The second is the climax because thats when everything breaks loose. All of the rats break out of the dump and they destroy anyone who gets in their way. I like the climax because Paul Zindel briefly describes how they escape from the dump.
