Kevin Major’s story is a brave look at how a tough period can harden a boy like a nu. That first book proved controversial as a novel for young adults because of a few swear words and some minor sexual references.

Kevin Major’s story is a brave look at how a tough period can harden a boy like a nut. Brilliantly, Major tackles the story in five voices. has pulled powerfully at unwilling cords, making sense of the most confusing battleground there is. Maclean’s. Major understands teenage boys in a way that few writers since . Chris is a believable teenager, irritating, loveable, clownish, serious. I knew the second was bound to raise more eyebrows.

Far From Shore by Kevin Major. The book begins when Chris, the main character, is at the Christmas dinner with his mom and sister when his dad walks in drunk. His dad usually does this, so it is nothing new. Chris's family is poor and when his dad moves away for the summer they have no way of making money. I remember reading this shortly after finishing Kevin Major's other great book for young adults, "Hold Fast", and being completely caught up in Chris's life and his plights

I remember reading this shortly after finishing Kevin Major's other great book for young adults, "Hold Fast", and being completely caught up in Chris's life and his plights. This and "Hold Fast" were pretty much my first introduction to more mature fiction aimed at the younger crowd. Before that my bookshelves had been pretty much dominated by comics, The Hardy Boys, and Gordon Korman (another Canadian great). Major showed a side of Newfoundland life that was usually unseen.

Winner of the first Canadian Young Adult Book Award and named a Best Book of the Year by School Library Journal, Far from Shore was hailed as a unique and innovative novel when it was first published. As he has done throughout his career, Kevin Major broke new ground by tackling a multinarrative structure in a young adult novel - an approach much imitated since but never more convincingly.

The book was written, Kevin Major says, out of love for a way of life and a people. It is an appeal for us Newfoundlanders to be like certain of the species of seaweed that inhabit our shores, which, when faced with the threat of being destroyed by forces they cannot control, evolve an appendage to hold them to the rocks, a holdfast.
