Tom Leveen writes ‘Party’ in 11 chapters, one for each point of view presented. Isn’t that what life is all about? Leveen has written a book not easily forgotten. It is mesmerizing in its dialogue and with its details.

Tom Leveen writes ‘Party’ in 11 chapters, one for each point of view presented. While we start with Beckett in Chapter 1, each additional chapter adds more information and additional perspectives, thus, building up the suspense and details that we can only get from the additional players in the story. The headings of the chapters are cool, as well, because all names are printed out, and the chapter’s lead character is highlighted.

After reading manicpixiedreamgirl, I was instantly enamored by Leveen's writing style and the amazing way he writes the plot and develops his characters. He does this once again in his novel Party, his first novel actually, and one that I really enjoyed.

Leveen, Tom. I run to the Blazer, jump in, crank the engine, and tear down Beachfront. A flash of black and silver catches my eye to the right and I don’t care, I just have to GO. Oh, god. I’m gonna be sick. You hear me talking, Big Shooter? Huh? Dear Jesus: Thank you for so completely and totally fucking up my whole life, love, Josh. How could you do this to me, God? How? You tell me. It's Saturday night in Santa Barbara and it seems like everyone is headed to the same destination. The reason is simple: to celebrate the end of school. But for eleven different people the motives are bit more complicated—to be noticed, to hook up, to make friends, to numb the pain, to get over an ex, to say goodbye. As each character takes a turn and tells his/her story, the eleven individuals intersect, reconnect, and combine in ways that none of them ever saw coming.Combine the poignancy of Thirteen Reasons Why with the energy of films like American Graffiti, Dazed and Confused, and Sixteen Candles and you get Party—a sneak peek into the lives of contemporary teens over the course of a single night. Alternating points of view and the timeless setting of an end-of-school party make this a compelling read. Those who pick it up cannot put it down.

Told in multiple points of view, Tom Leveen weaves together stories of classmates whose lives intersect, come apart and together before the night is complete. My favorite characters were Azize, Beckett and Ashley, and Morrigan and Josh my least. Each character had both positive and negative traits, each had sympathetic qualities. I would have loved a whole novel about Beckett, who was living on her own after her mother's death from cancer five months earlier. Leveen did a great job of moving the story along through the different POVs with enough overlap to show more that one side of a story, but not so much as to feel repetitive. I read PARTY is one sitting. Leveen adeptly gave unique voices to each character. I'll look forward to reading his other novels.

THEMES: high school, family, racism, PTSD, romance, break ups, sex, drinking, drugs, fighting, friendship

PARTY is a quick read filled with unique characters with timely backstories.

Being a newcomer to Leveen's writing, I asked him which book is a good example of his writing and where to start. It just so happened it was his first book.
I was taken on a fascinating journey through the eyes of eleven individuals, each with their own part of the story to tell. I wasn't sure at first where the story was headed but Leveen kept me interested with his writing. It soon became clear that all of the individuals were telling the story of their preparation for and attendance at the school year ending party to end all parties.
I admit to being a little over cautious about reading, given Leveen is known for his young adult fiction. I was not treated to an angst ridden screed but a well thought out look at the struggles of each of these individuals as they discover where they fit into this maze of human interaction.
Without giving any spoilers, I will say that I was quite pleased at the way Leveen pushed the plot forward in a somewhat unique sequential telling.
After reading this book, I believe I can pick up more of his work and enjoy.

As you all should know, Tom Leveen has quickly been rising up as a favorite author of mine. After reading manicpixiedreamgirl, I was instantly enamored by Leveen's writing style and the amazing way he writes the plot and develops his characters. It's saturday night in Santa Barbara and school is done for the year. Everyone is headed to the same party. Or at least it seems that way. The place is packed. The beer is flowing. Simple, right? But for 11 different people the motives are way more complicated. As each character takes a turn and tells his or her story, the eleven individuals intersect, and reconnect, collide, and combine in ways that none of them ever saw coming. -Amazon.com

First of all, the plot of this novel was great. I love the way Leveen composed a plot in which all the characters eventually intertwine to form a complicated, almost mysterious plot. It was lively, fun, and still very serious as it showed the consequences of partying and drinking. Not only does it show the negative outcomes of drinking, such as anger, lust, and danger, but it also shows what good things can come out of partying, such as friendship, love, and forgiveness. This plot shows that not everything is in black and white, and shows multiple viewpoints on a subject. This plot was enlightening, original, interesting, and wonderful testament to today's generation.

The characters were all so amazing in their own ways. Every character was original, unique, and interesting, and if these characters were real people, I would love to know (almost) all of them in real life. Each character was realistic and spoke more or less like they should, aka, like teenagers do today. But at points, I do feel like some of the characters felt slightly robotic. Mostly towards the beginning, just the first few characters, seemed a little fake to me. Thought the last half of the novel was splendid, and had absolutely no faults and the characters were divine. It was completely believable and I loved every second of it.

The writing was grand, as usual, and as we come to expect from Tom Leveen. He writes the point of view of a teenager flawlessly, and it always goes off without a hitch. His passion for working in theater and with young adults seems to rub off on his work, as he manages to write from the role of a teen and make it believable and interesting. His writing always impresses me and never ceases to surprise and inspire me. This novel is yet another great masterpiece from Tom Leveen and I loved it, and I cannot wait to read more of his work.

Party is a multi-layered story about discrimination and redemption. This story is told in multiple points of view which add a certain depth to the story. We see the lives of several teenagers played out as the story progresses to its climax. It goes to show that every story has many sides to it, and that you never really understand an event or a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes and see the world through their eyes. In each of the characters narrations, you feel, actually feel the pain that some of them are in. The raw emotion can be a little overwhelming. You feel the anger and pride. The need for redemption and acceptance is so real you become jittery as you read the book, not wanted to stop nor put the book down until you have finished the last page. Although I am an adult and sadly a long time away from my teenage years, I felt a huge connection to the book. I was struck by how often I felt like some of the characters in this book as both a teenager and an adult. Youth today would be able to easy identify with this book and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Leveen certainly has the "ear" of his young-adult audience, able to tell a story about the real challenges they face. His unique weaving of the story through the separate viewpoints of his characters was well-handled. I especially appreciated that their stories conclude with the possibility of redemption for the different characters. So much of modern story-telling thrives on pseudo-intellectual cynicism that declares life a downward spiral of hopeless failure. Life can be wonderful, and we need stories that inspire that hope. A wonderful first novel.
