The Secret Ingredient is the second book of Teashop Girls series. I have not read the first one. Fortunately, nothing confused me.

This book introduced me to Annie, her grandmother, one tea shop, Genna and Zoe, the contest and many kinds of scones. I liked reading them all especially when Annie told me about the contest updates and all scone recipes posts. Something that make this special, there were tea quotations, illustration and some pictures of scones. The Secret Ingredient is the second book of Teashop Girls series.

Annie, Genna, and Zoe have been hanging out at the Steeping Leaf since elementary school. The Teashop Girls do everything together -- at least they used to. With the end of eighth grade approaching, Genna's too busy with theater, Zoe's always at tennis, and Annie feels totally left out. What happened to tea every week, no matter what? When Annie convinces her grandmother to give her a job as a barista at the Leaf, things begin to look up. In between whipping up chai lattes for customers, and attempting to catch the attention of her Barista Boy crush, Annie is finally beginning to feel as grown-up as her best friends. But an eviction notice spells trouble for the Leaf and unless they can turn the business around, the teashop will have to close its doors forever. In the book The Teashop Girls by Laura Schaeffer, we learn that with friendship you can make things happen that aren’t possible on your own. This book is about three lifelong best friends in eighth grade (almost ninth grade): Annie, Genna, and Zoe, and all of their similarities and differences. As the book goes on the three best friends start drifting apart and Annie hopes that her new job at The Steeping Leaf, her grandmother’s tea shop, will bring them back together. But when a new coffee chain opens across the street, will the best friends come together in time to save the shop, or will it be too late?

This book is a five star book, best for ten to thirteen year olds. This book is five stars because it meets all of my criteria: I can relate to the characters, it’s funny, and there is drama.

I can relate to the characters. For example, “My eyes filled with tears. Maybe helping out was just q phase for Gen. She didn’t really care about it after all,” (Page 198). This shows that I can relate to the characters because it is normal to fight with friends sometimes even if it’s about something stupid. Another example is, “[…] It was a Friday and I am a freak for even thinking about homework on a Friday,” (Page 31). Because of this we know that the Teashop Girls also are always worried about homework and if they forgot to do anything for school just like I always do.

This book is funny. For example on page 4-5 it says, “And the silence of the storage room is blissful. It’s just me, upside down and Zenlike amidst a few dozen boxes of loose tea, some old teacups […] ‘I am one with the tea. The tea is one with me. I am one with the t---’” (Page 4-5). This proves that this book is funny because you don’t usually think of yourself as one with the tea, you usually think that you are one with the universe. Here is another example where there is humour, “‘I was standing on my head. I do that,’” (Page 7). This shows that this book has humour because normally people don’t stand on their heads in a storage room.

There is drama. For instance, “‘That’s what I thought at first, too,’ I said. ‘Stuff happens. But I think there might have been an unpaid bill. Louisa says that the Steeping Leaf doesn’t have a hip crowd; it has a hip-replacement crowd. What if they’ve mostly all croaked, and there’s no new customers?’” (Page 26). Because of this, we know that the Steeping leaf is having financial troubles and it leaves you wondering what will happen next. Another example is on page 188, “‘[…] Anyway, you might want to ask your friend what she said about this summer. After you left. Sounds like there will be one less Teashop Girl around.’” (Page 188) This proves that the book has drama because Annie is left wondering what Zach (Her enemy) is talking about and is confused.

All in all, in this book, we learn that friendship is a very powerful force. There are a lot of books, but I have never seen a book like this. This was such a good book it has inspired me to read the whole series. If you like books where you can you relate to the characters, and books with drama and humour, I would recommend reading this book.

This is an awesome book! I would recommend all 10- 15 year old girls should read this book with their friends. Then have a tea party using Laura's wonderful recipes, ideas, and tips. I rate this book 5 stars because I felt I connected with Annie Green. In this book you will hear all the problems of a middle school, small town girl. These problems include boys, and friends, and show how you will always need small town businesses and friends around to be able to live life to the fullest!

If you like tea or food and you like a little bit of drama, this book is perfect for you. There are tons of recipes that sound good an you may want to try. The book is so interesting I read it in two days! It's also almost a mystery you will want to never stop! I loved it. B)

The supplemental recipes and quotes about tea add to the charm of this book's junior high aged plot. Crushes on boys and breaks in friendship center around the Steeping Leaf teashop.
