Alexander the Great (Sterling Point Books) by John Gunther (2007-08-01). I picked up this book hoping to get a great view of Alexander's short life, and intimate details about the famous battles he struggled through. However, this double-spaced book took me a bit over 2 hours to finish while reading at a leisurely pace. It was short, sweet and lacked a lot of information. It's main selling point was that it was an interesting read if not illustrated by the point that I never put it down, but that was about it. It could have been a list of "50 interesting facts about Alexander the Great" and was simply stretched into a 140 page book.

Alexander The Great, John Gunther, Earaj Gharib (Translator) Some say he was the greatest warrior in history, building an empire that extended from Europe to Africa and on to India and Central Asia. In a stirring narrative, famed historian John Gunther tells the story of Alexander the Great who, at only age 21, became King of Macedonia and set off on a 12-year journey to conquer the known world and extend the boundaries of Greek civilization.

John Gunther (August 30, 1901 – May 29, 1970) was an American journalist and author. His success came primarily by a series of popular sociopolitical works, known as the "Inside" books (1936–1972), including the best-selling Inside . However, he is now best known for his memoir Death Be Not Proud, on the death of his beloved teenage son, Johnny Gunther, from a brain tumor.

Fortunately, Gunther does not follow the popular inclination among juvenile biographers to make fame and leadership necessary virtues, but takes his hero through the ups and downs of debauchery and personal jealousies that beast him, and gives by way of a sensible balance the sense of the mutual impact of personality and historical event.

My son wanted to do a school report on Alexander the Great and we needed suitable material. This turned out to be the perfect source for a 9 year old.

It could have been a list of "50 interesting facts about Alexander the Great" and was simply stretched into a 140 page book. That is to say, there was less than one thing to learn on each page. The author (other than his grammatical errors) was clearly skilled when it came to writing, but this was not a serious attempt to capture the life of Alexander.

I'd recommend this book to high school students or adults trying to get a very basic overview of Alexander the Great. This is not to be taken as university-level reading material.

My son is required to read books for school that are at least 175 pages long, after receiving this one, it is only 158 pages...a far cry from the claim that Amazon makes that it is 176.

This is a very good version of the story of Alexander the Great. It was a nicely balanced mix of the famous stories from his life, and the obscure stories that teachers generally won't even mention. History books and summaries that are readable to younger ages usually only focus on all the amazing things Alexander the Great did, but this book also covers the mistakes. This is nice because it teaches you a lot more about what kind of man he was, and why he went on to do what he did. Details like how he was at the front of the line during every battle he was in. How he could wipe out entire cities in his rage, but loved his mother and wrote to her regularly during his expedition. This book covers the best and worst times that are necessary to having a good general knowledge of Alexander's life.

Because this book is written so well I would advise to anyone who is interested in knowing more about Alexander the Great. But, in terms of reading difficulty, it's probably best for a 10-13 year-old reader.

This is an ok rendition of Alexander's life for a younger reader. It avoids the gore that could have been described about some of Alexander's battles. One thing that I didn't like were some references to other historical figures without mentioning who they were. Author assumed that a person should know Hitler, Napoleon and a few others but for a younger person this would be useless. As to an adult, if the adult didn't want to go into great detail into Alexander's life and miss the details of his great battles then this would be ok but the adult would be missing a lot. For an adult it is a quick read.
