Robert Whitfield's reading of London Match will have the listener wishing that the great espionage game had gone on forever. Whitfield handles Deighton's multinational cast effortlessly-even when they all appear together in a scene. Beautifully written, deep characters, and masterful storytelling make this book a pleasure to read.

This is the second of the Bernard Samson novels by Len Deighton (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match).

Now on the shadowy East-West battlefield of Mexico City. This is the second of the Bernard Samson novels by Len Deighton (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match). It usually takes a little while for a Len Deighton novel to get going, but once it does, it roars like a freight train until the very last page. The action moves from Mexico to London to Berlin and back to Mexico. Bernard Samson is under suspicion because his wife Fiona, a spy like her husband, defected to the Soviets, leaving the London Central people suspicious of his own intentions.

The first trilogy comprises the books Berlin Game, Mexico Set . Len Deighton has stated that Bernard's testimony in the books is not reliable.

The first trilogy comprises the books Berlin Game, Mexico Set and London Match, the second comprises Spy Hook, Spy Line and Spy Sinker, and the third and final trilogy comprises Faith, Hope and Charity. The plot of the entire trilogy of trilogies revolves around Samson's wife Fiona, also an intelligence officer, and which side she is really working for, after she has defected to the East Germans in the first trilogy, leaving a distraught Bernard with their two children. Her defection also causes some of his superiors to question his loyalty.

Mexico Set opens with Bernard Samson and Dicky Cruyer in Mexico City. Of course every story worth reading has all of the above. Berlin Game with its dénouement set the scene. For Bernard the problems are piling higher and higher. While Berlin Game saw Bernard battered by professional dilemmas we now see the complex uncertainties of his private life. After that Mexico Set used arguments, anger and confidences to reveal new sides of the characters and their shifting attitudes to each other.

Game, Set and Match is a 1988 television serial directed by Ken Grieve and Patrick Lau and written by John Howlett. It is based on the books Berlin Game, Mexico Set and London Match by Len Deighton. The two directors worked separately on different episodes. Samson is sent to Berlin to bring out a Brahms agent.

Deighton is a fairly clever writer, and I do look forward to following this 'trilogy of trilogies' through.
But I also felt that this one wasn't as intricate or well-thought-out as Berlin Game...
I wonder whether, in Deighton's mind, he'd fallen in love with the idea of an extended narrative,
had a few twists and a specific ending for the entirety in mind, and thought of this installment more as a means to
an eventual end, and less as a standalone tale...? Berlin Game was internally consistent, and didn't really
require sequels (not that they aren't welcome). But in this one he seemed at odds with his own story, sort of making it up
as he went along to suit the needs of the moment, and to fill the requisite number of pages.
I'm not going to attempt to prosecute my point, but it was a feeling I had several times in the course of it.
Still, I admire his prose, and am only too happily dragged along, with very little resistance!

You wouldn't want to play chess or poker with Deighton--he would figure out all your best moves or hands. I was skeptical of his being one of the top British spy novelists, but his genius proved me wrong. From the first paragraph to the last, this book is cinema in prose. The twists in plot are unpredictable. His insight into human motivation, personality and body language are unparalleled. It's the psychoanalyst's version of Smiley's People.
This guy is worth the read.

The second in a series - Deighton continues to explore the shadowy world of spy/counter-spy he began in Berlin Games. Many of the characters introduced in the first book continue in this book as Samson tries to shake off the suspicions brought about by his wife in Berlin Games. A thoughtful, steady development of both character and plot continues to bring delight to the reader.

I love these books. This is my second time through the 9 book Bernard Samson series. This time I will also read the 10th "background" book that comes 4th in the over series, Winter. On the surface, they are spy novels, and provide a level of suspense and action. But on a deeper level, they are psychological and relationship novels.

This is the 2nd book in the Game, Set, Match series (includes Hook, Line, Sinker, Hope, Faith, Charity and Winter). I read them all and really enjoyed the read. Deighton does a great job of writing. He always puts in a lot of detail and is very descriptive in his writing. Start at the beginning and read them all, you won't regret it.

I read the first in this series and have read 1/3 of this one. Really good. Hard to follow at times but don't let that bother you too much. But read the first one first.
The ending is what caused me to rate this book at only three stars. Everything is suspenseful and very interesting until the end. Most of the book leads up to the ending, but a number of outcomes are not given, leaving one wondering what happened to several parts of the plot. I thought maybe these would be answered in the next book, London Match, but so far it hasn't.
