Cathedral was one of DeMille's early books. It was first published in 1981. As I read the book, I continued to note how different the story is, pre-9-11, from more current writings. I also compared this book to The Marching Season by Daniel Silva, another story about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It started out well; DeMille was able to romanticize the IRA and their cause to hook the reader before it moved to "present day" NYC. From here, things started to unravel.

A band of Irish extremists led by Brian Flynn seizes St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City on St. Patrick's Day and demands the release of prisoners from Long Kesh prison in Northern Ireland

Although this is not my favorite Nelson DeMille book (and I have now read all of them), it is so beautifully written that I have to give it five stars. Typical of DeMille, the characters are so completely and deeply developed that they almost walk off of the page. The story was so skillfully told that I could follow every detail and my heart broke for some of the characters on BOTH sides.

Some reviewers complained that there were too many characters. I disagree in that such an operation/exercise/incident would summon up every politician on both sides of the Atlantic who was able to hold a press conference and a smile. It would require the services of NYPD, National Guard and any other military organization able to stand upright and wield a weapon. Because of the significance of St. Patrick's Cathedral, it is not surprising that there were so many Catholic Clergy involved. No, there were not too many characters - even the innocent bystanders, lookey-loos on rooftops and hanging out of window were important to the story.

Other reviewers thought it was too long. Perhaps it was and the story dragged at some points, but this was a complex operation with layers upon layers of history between the participants. That history was so deftly woven into the story with just a touch of the Irish magic (Father Donnelly, Whitehorn Abbey and the ring) that it took a lot of pages to tell it.

My advice to readers is that Nelson DeMille is one of the most gifted writers I have ever read but don't start with this book. Begin with The Gold Coast and the Gatehouse and go forward from there.
I cannot believe all the bad reviews on this book. I found it mysterious, thrilling, scary, interesting and I could literally picture everything that was going on so easily (because of the wonderful writing). Loved the jaded NY cop, the IRA fella, the extremist and the rest of the cast and crew. I can't believe some people described it as boring - I just don't get that. I had read the book, loved it and the only thing I could find at the time was a disappointing abridged audio version that was read like someone speed reading a phone book. I was delighted to see that an unabridged, Scott Brick version is now available (its been a few years since I read the book). I've read all of the John Corey books and I think this book is just as good. I know it gave me the shivers a few times (and the atmosphere) and its a rare book that can do that. So take a chance and read this one, I think its worth it.
A substantial and thrilling story of Irish terrorists and their plot to blow up St. Patrick's cathedral on St. Patrick's Day.

All of the action takes place within a 24 hour period, with the explosion set for dawn on March 18th. As one would expect, numerous political types step into the planning by police to manipulate the outcome to their favor. The hostages - the Archbishop of New York, one of his priests, a former Irish rebel -turned - peacemaker and a representative of the British government - are joined by the largest hostage of them all, the beautiful and enormous cathedral and its adjacent structures.

The revelry that regularly overtakes New York City on this holiday continued through the night, and was an almost-amusing counterpoint to the seriousness of what was going on inside. And yes, an animal was harmed in the making of this story - but in a most heroic way.

What struck me most about this novel was the soundtrack. No, I did not listen to an audio version. Without giving anything away, I have to say that DeMille's storytelling is so good, detailing the activities inside and outside the cathedral during the long night of waiting, that I truly felt that I was hearing what was happening. That was certainly a dimension I don't usually get from reading.

As I was reading, I was thinking what a shame it is that this book would never become a movie, in our post-9/11 world. If it were half as vivid as the writing in this book, it would be a hit, for sure.
As a fan of Nelson DeMille I expected a good read from "Cathedral" and I was not disappointed. Although the novel was first published over 30 years ago, its premise is as timely now as it was when written, although the ethnicity may be different. The theme is "Terrorism", no matter what name you may wish to call it. The main target, as the title clearly states, is a cathedral, New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral, to be exact. The Terrorists want to make a statement, officials want to save face, a government conspiracy complicates matters, and a hero prevails. Pretty standard elements of a thriller of any age. By the time you are done, you will certainly dislike if not detest the aims and tactics of both sides of the conflict, a goodly number of the main characters and, possibly, the outcome. What's not to like? As usual, DeMille provides suspense, action and romance, pretty much non-stop. If you haven't read DeMille, this will be a good introduction; if you have already been introduced to him and missed this old-timer, give it a go. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy the experience.
Love Nelson DeMille, but this book was overly slow and detailed . I found myself skimming some paragraphs. I made it halfway through so continued on.If you have never read a DeMille before - don't start with this one or you'll never read another. Start with his real thrillers - the Corey novels.
I have loved Nelson DeMille since Charm School. Have read most of his books but missed this one. Plus I love the prices on older great books from my favorite authors. I also read Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy, David Baldacci if that helps you decide. Cathedral is a "one event in one place" type of suspense novel, not a globe trotting romp. But really good. Lots of twists and surprises.
The action and suspense make you feel like you are in a full-Nelson (De Mille). The story captures your imagination and emotions. The plot is logical without being obvious. The characters are fully fleshed out warts and all. The aromas from this Irish stew tantalize the reader. We are going to Ireland soon and do not plan to pack any Orange outfits. Erin Go Bragh.
