I told my wife once that reading Rendell is like listening to your mother and grandmother tell a story about people and places you never knew, and events that seem only vaguely real. As the story goes on, however, the tension builds and only then does one see that everything has a purpose and only then does one realize something incredible has happened.

Ruth Rendell noyed at having to spend her pocket money on fares than at being stood up. They had met only once before and that had been on the previous Sunday. Like a talented athlete such as Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods (before his recent collapse), Ruth Rendell went on a period from roughly 1976 to 1987 where no one could touch her. Her writing was perfectly plotted, wonderfully pitched, and full of dizzying suspense and tension. With books like "A Demon in My View," "A Judgment in Stone," "A Dark Adapted Eye," and "A Fatal Inversion," she established herself at the top of her craft.

This book, came right in the middle of that run and is one of her best. Surprisingly, however, it was the one I had the toughest time tracking down. No library near me stored it and very few copies seem to exist online. What sets this book apart from the others is that the crime occurs relatively early in the book and the resulting tension comes as characters accept (or not) their new realities. Not a word or detail is wasted and not a character is spared from the ensuing events.

Fabulous twisting of several plot-lines to tell the story of a man who is desperately trapped in a boring loveless life, and how he seizes the one opportunity for adventure and freedom. Tied in with this is the tale of two desperate criminals and how their foolish plan to rob a bank unravels... and the surprising heroism of their kidnap victim. The conclusion is both unexpected and satisfactory.

This is an excellent psychological thriller; so much happening so quickly in the sad lives of multiple broken characters. Despite the eventual end of the story, no one achieved any semblance of what
they hoped to acquire. Unbelievable page-turner!!!

great book.

The usual gripping plot that Rendell conceives; the story is thrilling but you finally come to the conclusion that such amount of foolish persons reunited around a central topic, and making the most absurd decisions, is a bit of an exageration. Anyway, as fiction goes, anything is possible. Entertaining, agile, easy to read.
I read this per the recommendation of "Crime Squad's Ruth Rendell Top Ten". The #1 novel, a Barbara Vine novel, has been taking me a while to get into. This novel was listed as #2, and I just finished it pretty quickly-- so smoothly woven, omniscient narrator so perfect for each character, whether major or minior. There'll never be a better crime novelist than Ruth Rendell...
