Window on the Square book. The scene is new york city in the 1870's  . At this stage of the story Phyllis Whitney offers no clues as to Melinda’s physical attractiveness, but based on how she responds, I did get the indication that she’s wise and I was looking forward to reading how she would find a way to understand young Master Jeremy. What a fantastic story start this was turning out to be!

I love this book. I have been a fan of Phyllis A Whitney's books for many years. This book particularly has the right mix of suspence, mystery and with just a sprinkling of romance to make you feel like the heroine is walking on the sharp edge of danger. It's hard to put down as are most of her books. C;-)

This romantic suspense novel is set in Washington Square of New York City in the 1870s. Megan Kincaid, who has suffered the loss of her closest family members, is offered a position as a sort of "therapy governess" for a very troubled nine year old boy. According to the local newspapers, Jeremy Reid accidently shot his own father, Dwight Reid, the popular District Attorney of New York, when he was only seven years old. The boy's uncle, Brandon Reid, who is now married to his brother's widow, wants his nephew to be helped by Megan; but his wife, the beautiful and often reclusive Leslie Reid, does not care for her son.

Megan is drawn to her challenging charge, and does her best to reach him. Her task is made more difficult by the tensions between family members and the antagonism of Miss Garth, a jealous loyal servant of Leslie Reid. Megan starts to develop a friendship with the family tutor, Andrew; and at the same time she is becoming increasingly drawn to the brooding master of this unhappy house.

Phyllis Whitney was a remarkable author, she created a dark and suspenseful atmosphere for the reader. Readers will find this novel difficult to put down, the clever unfolding of plot twists and turns keep one unsure of the true motives of nearly every character until final pages.

Somewhat reminiscent of Jane Eyre with a female main character who gains employment in a house full of mystery... and a head of household who is headstrong and difficult. I enjoyed the mystery and subtle romance of the story.

I read this title as a teenager and have just finished again. I have enjoyed the development of her characters and the way she spins her mysteries to keep you guessing until the last pages. I will continue to read her books.
