Years ago, a secret Soviet plan was created to destroy the Alaskan oil pipeline. Now, those plans have been stolen by the brilliant and treacherous ex-KGB agent Ivan Kerikov. Joining forces with a powerful Arab oil minister, Charon's Landing is about to be unleashed at last. But they didn't count on the one man who possesses the determination and daring to stop them cold. They didn't count on Philip Mercer. This is the second Jack Du Brul book I've read and I'm feeling like Philip Mercer is a budget version of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt. That's not to say this book is bad, it's certainly not. It's just.

Book 2 of the Mercer series is right out of today's headlines. Militant environmentalists attacking Alaska's oil industry intertwined with an old KGB plot, coupled with a plot to reshape the Middle East. Murder, mayhem, a little romance, plus excellent detailed information about the oil industry, supertankers, and the like, plus a look into the inner workings of the U.A.E. Phillip Mercer is a trouble magnet, and this book is no exception. Awesome in scope, moving from Washington D.C. To Alaska, the U.K., and the Middle East. Du Brul is a master wordsmith, a great phraseologist, and a tremendous storyteller. Im a fan of the late Vince Flynn, the late Tom Clancy, Lee Child, Ted Bell, Ben Coes, and the like. Du Brul has elements of all these authors in his writing. I highly recommend this series.

I read this second installment of the Philip Mercer superhero series all the way through. At the end of the day, I was left with a little bit of "ho-hum"---not a good thing for a story so packed with thrills and intrigue at every turn. Some aspects of the tragedies envisioned/attempted by the antagonists seemed to be over stated, albeit certainly troublesome if they had actually been played out in a real world. But, this does not seem like a "real world" story. The author has Mercer doing things that were just too incredible, as in "not credible". I was reminded of the Marvel super hero comic book series. This book seems to be a novelized Marvel superhero comic series all condensed into a novel. If you are looking for a story that is purely escapist and lacking in credibility, this is for you. I am currently half way though the third installment of Philip Mercer's antics. So far, that story seems to be more realistic, i.e., credible.

The first two books were quite enjoyable until I read Charon's Landing. It was long winded and too detailed at times, too bloodthirsty and provided unnecessary details such as the massacre of a cat, which was entirely unnecessary to the plot line and just made me feel sick and disgusted, ditto on the torture of the foe Rufti, which I felt made the hero Mercer and Khalid Kuddhari, just as bad as Rufti. I felt that Du Brul could have got the point across without this needless added violence, which to me was a turn off, in an otherwise very enjoyable book. I won't be reading any more of his books!

This book is the exact formula the Clive Cussler uses on his books,.have a national or world disaster, and a hero who saves the day and always gets the girl at the end of the book. Only, Clive Cussler's books are not as cruel with so many innocent people and animals being killed. Putting a cat down the garbage disposal or having a pet rabbit killed in a bird hunt...Just didn't care for Jack B. DuBruil's style

Will Kerikov ever die? I have to read later books in the Mercer series to find out. This book is formulaic, has mediocre dialogue, over-descriptive passages, a stereotypical(?) hero(?) who is a drunk, drives fast cars, can get beat up within millimeters of his life, get the woman, get beat up some more, get the woman again, all the while killing people left and right, front and back, etc.

The book is good enough for my pre-bedtime read.

I am reading the Jack Du Brul books for a second time. They are all fabulous reads. I noticed this time that some of the dialog was a little silly. I listened to the audio recording and found my commute much more interesting. The only down side of the audio recording is that it is hard to fast forward accurately past the sexual conquests of the hero. When I tried to ride them out, hoping they were short, they seem long and graphic. I still enjoyed the book and will read the rest.

Perfect book to read while traveling. It felt like I was reading an Indiana Jones movie. Lots of twists and turns, but nothing complicated. The literary equivalent of a bud light.
Another winner from Jack duBrul. Wow! How does he do it? These Philip Mercer stories are awesome and gripping. Only those who have read them will believe just how great they are! I love other authors Vince Flynn and Lee Child but this guy is over-taking them! He is wonderful and, again, unputdownable.
