Reilly enlists former marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger to parse out the scarce details of Mili's military service.

Four famed ’60s radicals are gunned down at long range by a sniper. Under enormous media scrutiny, the FBI quickly concludes that Marine war hero Carl Hitchcock, whose ninety-three kills were considered the leading body count tally among American marksman in Vietnam, was the shooter. But as the Bureau, led by Special Agent Nick Memphis, bears down, Hitchcock commits suicide. In closing out the investigation, Nick discovers a case made in heaven: everything fits, from timeline, ballistics, and forensics to motive, means, and opportunity. Maybe it’s a little too perfect.

Nick asks his friend, the retired Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger, to examine the data. Using a skill set no other man on earth possesses, Swagger soon discovers unseen anomalies and gradually begins to unravel a sophisticated conspiracy—one that would require the highest level of warcraft by the most superb special operations professionals.Swagger soon closes in, and those responsible will stop at nothing to take him out. But these heavily armed men make the mistake of thinking they are hunting Bob, when he is, in fact, hunting them. And when Swagger and the last of his antagonists finally face each other, reenacting a classic ritual of arms, it is clear that at times there’s nothing more necessary than a good man with a gun and the guts to use it.

Its hard not to like a hero like Swagger and once again he finds himself behind the scope and kind of working with the FBI to get to the bottom of several sniper-like murders. Swagger does his magic and discovers who did it and brings his brand of justice to the murderers. The finale with the Ranger with the big iron on his hip brought a smile to my face as I grew up listening to that Marty Robbins song. And...the Marine sniper that Swagger tries to clear bears an uncanny resemblance to a real Marine sniper. Very similar name, same number of confirmed kills, even the same burn injuries from saving men in Viet Nam.

Hunter defines his character Swagger better than ever and keeps us right at the edge of our seats. The story line pushes our imagination at times, but that's what a good story does. My only complaint is the bad guy is a little too convincing at the beginning of the story, and then turns into a parody of himself at the end. It's the detailed unraveling of the mystery of how a master sniper "did not" commit the crimes that captures our attention, and then the adventures of Bob Lee as he relentlessly (is there any other way) pursues the bad guys. The interference of Washington power people gets our dander up, and makes the story relevant in realtime. The scene where he allows himself to be captured and tortured is grimly played, and sets us up for "the sniper's" revenge. The final shootout is....Well, you have to read the book to decide about that for yourself.

I loved Point of Impact so much and all the earlier books by Stephen Hunter starring Bob Lee Swagger and Earl Lee. But I must say that these later renditions of Bob Lee are just not that interesting to me. I think that Mr. Hunter has seen the success of other writers of the same genre, churning out a multitude of books starring their hero in order to please their readers and making scads of money. So, by resurrecting an updated Bob Lee Swagger in a rapid succession of books is a business decision that Mr. Hunter has made at the expense of a good story. I'm disappointed that Mr. Hunter is a sellout. I still love Bob Lee and I hope that Mr. Hunter being the terrific writer that he is will just slow down and take Bob Lee into another well thought out story that I would be happy to read. I'll be waiting for that.

Bought iSniper after seeing it on a Kindle Daily Deal, then had the opportunity to read it on a long-haul trip. Started before boarding, done before landing. It's a good enough 'entertainment,' but author probably just made a list of what he wants included as a scene (must have waterboarding, a western duel, a sniper duel, a camouflage battle, old vs. new tech) and then figured out the sequence to lay them all down. This is not necessarily bad, but still you can read fast without losing much on prose or plotting. My time was not wasted, but I'll probably read a LeCarre (also in the queue) if I'll do it over again.
This book did not entice me to check out other Swagger novels.

This is the 6th book in the Swagger series, and involves the shooting of 4 60's radicals by an experienced sniper. When a former Marine sniper (Hitchcock) is found in a motel, dead of an apparent suicide, the FBI thinks they have the case wrapped up. As one of the dead is the former wife (Jane Fonda facsimile) of a TV mogul, T.T. Constable, (a Ted Turner facsimile), Swagger is brought in as a consultant. He concludes the case is too perfect and finds a staggering flaw indicating that Hitchcock is innocent and another victim in the crime. Bob goes in to investigate and tracks down the missing link for the case with help from the FBI and local police. In the meantime, T.T. Constable is putting pressure on the agent in charge in both public and private ways to get him to quickly close the case. Bob must use all of his skills to solve the case and bring the guilty to justice. this was a clever, well written, thriller, far superior to some of the series currently out there that seem to do the wash and repeat novel.

Stephen Hunter shows not only a true understanding of the uniqueness of the sniper community, but displays the story as a true craftsman using the English language as his tools.

While I have read numerous authors, Stephen Hunter displays a level of expertise others can only dream about.

So go grab book 1 and work your way through and you will understand.

This book should have been heavily edited. It's too long. Lots and lots and lots of detail. I enjoyed every page and couldn't stay away for very long. Stephen Hunter knows how to write a book which I enjoy. Were I given the editor's pen and had my way, I would have ruined the book.

In the book, Boo Lee Swagger is retired, feels the pains of past battles and age, and is compelled to get involved. The stage of life and the choices Swagger makes creates realism or an atmosphere which makes the book enjoyable.

This is not a page turner. It's a book I just enjoyed reading and looked forward to picking up. My suggestion is to savor it since there aren't many good thrillers out there.
this book seems the same as all the rest of Mr. Hunters books about Gunny Swagger it is fairly predictable maybe not page to page but the character goes through the same type of scenarios as he does in each of the other books I have read. The writing is entertaining much like LLamour's westerns. I do still enjoy them and find it easy too bond with figures in the story.
