Perri O’Shaughnessy “will keep you turning pages into the night,” applauds USA Today, in praise of the celebrated novels of suspense starring the audacious yet all-too-human defense attorney Nina Reilly. Now, in a spellbinding new thriller, O’Shaughnessy plunges Nina back into the center of a murderous family game, and reawakens a very real nightmare she had every reason to believe was dead . . . and buried. A mix of slick and seamy, South Lake Tahoe, California, is the perfect setting for adventurers, criminals—and lawyers. In addition to coping with her demanding, sometimes creepy, clients, Nina Reilly is dealing with prickly personal issues involving her sixteen-year-old son Bob, his estranged father, and her investigator, confidante, and sometimes lover Paul van Wagoner. Then, in walks disaster. The millionaire owner of a Tahoe ski resort, Philip Strong is the father of Jim Strong, a sociopath who devastated many innocent lives, including Nina’s. Two years earlier, she had to defend Jim against charges of murder. He shattered her life, then vanished. Paul van Wagoner made sure of it. Now in negotiations to sell his ski resort, Philip has received a letter purportedly from his fugitive son in extradition-free Brazil, demanding his share of the profits. Philip is convinced it’s authentic. Nina’s certain it’s a con, but to prove that means exposing the secrets of someone very close to her. Then two local women are brutally murdered. Nina begins to question their links to her new client, and the truth about Jim Strong’s sudden disappearance. As Nina’s worst fears flood back, with time running out, she’s about to discover that the dreams of the dead can still destroy the living. With its breakneck pace, pulsing human drama, and serpentine twists, Dreams of the Dead establishes once again why Perri O’Shaughnessy has been hailed as “a master of the legal thriller” (Vincent Bugliosi).

this is a very well written crime novel which has an interesting plot. I liked the way that the main character Nina Reilly
had to balance her role as the court lawyer with her role aa in effect a single mother.as well running a practice which had to cover its expenses.
The authors in a previous novel wrote of the murder from the point of view of the killer and in this novel the identity of the killer is not revealed until the end and is not the type who has come from a broken home. The characters in the novel are not the social outcasts but people who are capable of earning a living. . In this novel Sandy who works for Nina has written some pages as the writers wanted to convey a sense that Sandy has her own interests as well as her own family to look after. The Lake Tahoe is an important part of the background to the plot but the authors
don't waste many pages on describing the landscape but sufficient to convey the feeling that the characters like living there . The ending is unusual but does not stretch the bounds of credibility out of all proportion. The only odd part of the novel are the pages in a different print and don't really fit into the plot. However this novel is so enjoyable that
I ignored them

With this novel the series became one I will sample before I buy. I have really enjoyed these novels and somehow missed this latest entry. Excited to get it - like connecting with an old friend I haven't seen for awhile. I think the plots and characters have been great, in the past. I have also enjoyed the setting, a beautiful place and the ski town lifestyle - I am a skier. The books featured an interesting group of people in an exciting locale interacting in ways that are frankly preposterous but so well written that the reader gets caught up and it all seems real. All of a sudden this last book seemed more like a romance novel with aspects of legal thriller. For me, it was NOT a page turner. The "book within a book" was a device that can work, but I found distracting. There were large parts italicized that I found confusing I did not feel as if it was done well and contributed to the book as a whole. The focus seemed to be more on Nina's relationships and what she was wearing than the plot. I almost got the feeling that someone (publisher? editor?) asked the authors to step out of the legal thriller comfort zone and change up their act to attract a wider audience. I hope it didn't work and we soon see another book more like the ones this team used to write. Enough with the shoes, already!

I always enjoy the Nina Reilly series. This book does not disappoint either. Nina is taken back in time with a mystery that needs to be solved right away. Her friend and former lover, Paul, is at the heart of the matter and he has to decide how to solve the situation. I was on the edge of my seat while reading it and could not wait to figure out how things will be made right for all the concerned parties.

I love to read about the Tahoe area. Maybe it is because I grew up in Reno or that my sister lives in South Lake Tahoe. I can picture Nina's cabin and her office. And the characters are a delight to follow on their journey through life. I always look forward to a new installment in Nina's life.

This is the fourth book I have read by these two sisters known as Perri O'Shaughnessy. Each one of the books draws you into the story immediately and then you won't put the book down. I only wish they could write them quicker. I wish they would continue writing the Nina Reilly series again even though she now lives in Carmel. I'm so glad a friend loaned me the first book and enabled me to find these author's. I hope I can find another author who writes like the O'Shaughnessy's.

When a story grabs your so that you hate to put it down....what a treat. Top drawer writing and storytelling. Wonderful portrait of Tahoe season to season, real people, true characters.

A good read if you follow the O'Shaughnessy sisters' work.

Unfortunately I'd already read it, but my mom hadn't and her Kindle that I gave her for Christmas last year gets any book I buy. So the purchase wasn't wasted. I read all Perri O'Shaughnessy books and they're all good. Unfortunately, this is their ("Perri" is actually two sisters, Pam and Mary) latest book. Get busy, ladies! I'm waiting for your next book!
I have read the entire Nina Reilly series and I love them all. Nina is a single mother and attorney living in Tahoe. Each book is a progression in her life and that of her son Bobby, her relationship with her on-and-off lover private detective Paul, and her relationship with Sandy, her Washoe secretary. There is always a surprise ending.
