I liked this spy type thriller.

Jonathan Quinn is a fascinating fictional character who runs a "cleaning" business - but he is not your normal cleaner. He contracts to "clean" away dead bodies, sometimes making them disappear and sometimes leaving them to be found in what appears to be accidental circumstances. Of course, he is always equipped for cleaning up a murder scene and well equipped to deal with dangerous situations.

This time, things are a little different because the job he is contracted to do impacts on his family - the family that he abandoned long ago. He has just lost his father (who he hated) and at the funeral while his mother is loving, his sister, Liz, still despises him because he left home without an apparent reason. Of course, the family have no idea what Quinn does for a living. You may also start to get a bit confused with Quinn's real name, Jake Oliver which he changed a long time ago.

When Quinn is "cleaning" on a contract for a man called David Wills, at the scene Quinn spots another team who turn out to be Russian. They have a very different agenda as they are tracking down someone they call "The Ghost" who has been killing off all of the people who are in an old photo with "The Ghost". Then another brutal team comes into the action and threatens to kidnap Quinn's mother (in Minnesota) and his sister (in Paris) to stop his pursuit of "The Ghost".

Quinn arranges protection for his mother but protecting a sister who hates him is much harder. In the process of finding and defeating "The Ghost" and his team, Quinn must also protect the family he abandoned so long ago, which he still loves.

This is a convoluted and clever plot bringing together Quinn's current life with his former one. It is a great action-packed page-turning adventure that should be enjoyed not only by anyone who has read any earlier books in the series but also by newcomers because Battles has seamlessly included a great back-story.

One of the unfavorable reviewers turns on the antennae and decides these plentiful great reviews are plants by friends and family of the author. Must be as the book stinks, the reviewer claims.

Well, I would not know this Battles guy passing on the street or sitting next to him on an airplane. His picture on the inside back cover is not especially memorable. Brett Battles' fiction sure is memorable though, bringing the new suspense and thrills back to the tired genre.

By now, almost every plot has been reworked several times in spy vs. spy, good vs. evil, and family vs. secret working life. The Silenced, however, is one book that grabs, holds and keeps you from making your dinner in spite of your empty stomach.

There are just aren't any moments when you think, oh, time to take a break. Or when the plot seems like déjà vu, when did I run across these plot devices before? Here we have a fairly original occupation for this type of fiction, while the ethics and morals of the protagonist are never quite pure, but never really sordid either.

By now you have read reviews about Jonathan Quinn, the professional cleaner of death scenes who removes all traces of the event; his life and working partner, Orlando, a mother and computer whiz who can handle hand-to-hand combat on occasion; Nate, the almost-ready-for-prime-time apprentice to Jonathan, loyal to a fault; and then the rotating cast including his estranged sister Liz, nine years his junior, and a host of Russians. Part of the plot twists on sorting the good Russians from the bad Russians. You think you know, but are really never sure until the last few chapters.

These Battles' Jonathan Quinn books are great fun, terrific escapism and really plausible, err, well, seemingly so. In 95% of the thriller books bodies are being left on every other street corner, in hotel rooms and abandoned buildings, so someone has to clean them up without a trace. Jonathan Quinn and his creator Brett Battles do a remarkable job.

I think this is the best of the first four Quinn novels (although it is well worth reading them in order. All of them are well written and very entertaining, however this one has an added layer of complexity. There are several plot strands that are clearly related but for most of the journey it is not obvious how. Quinn himself is aware of this and wonders whether he is working on the "right" side.

Also I appreciated that the motives of the players in this one were reasonably straightforward, as opposed to the elaborate Bond-villian conspiracy at the heart of the third novel. The characterisations are interesting, although like others I'm not keen to hear more from Quinn's sister Liz.

The author is honest and does not pretend it's a work of art. The characters could stand a bit more depth. The sister could be more like her mother, i.e. less combative and less whiny. The pacing is good and the plot goes from well-explained to almost confusing very quickly but does become apparent in short order. The finances are a bit confusing in that some of the plot turns seem expensive and while the protagonist is represented as making far more than most of us, it doesn't seem enough to pay for some of what happens. There's also too much family angst that appears to be filler where the plot alone doesn't seem to fill enough pages.

Better than most of its genre but not good enough for 4-stars. I was glad that there were no political rants. The colorful language was not excessive nor was the one sex scene lurid.

All that said, I'll see how much the first book costs and perhaps see if the freshman outing was better.
