Because Alex knows that in a realm of money, loss, and madness, something terrible pushed Jamie over the edge-or else someone is getting away with murder.

When the phone rings in the middle of the night, child psychologist. I have read all of Jonathan Kellerman's novels, starting with WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS back in 1986, two years before I began writing a novel of my own. I had to wait a while for BLOOD TEST, SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, and THE BUTCHER'S THEATER to come to a bookstore near me because I was in Europe at the time. Then OVER THE EDGE hit the bookshelves. This is the only thriller I've ever read twice.

Jamey has been arrested and accused of being a serial killer who preys on young male prostitutes. Sturgis recognizes the photo of a victim from one of his unsolved crimes two decades earlier.

Perhaps you're in the wrong profession. I backed out of his grasp and moved toward the door. I don't think so,' I said, and walked away. n and bought provisions: a pound of corned beef, new pickles, coleslaw, and a loaf of caraway rye sliced thick. The evening traffic was chromium soup, but I madeit to the glen by six-thirty. Once settled, I fed the koi, glanced at the mail, and went into the kitchen, where I prepared sandwiches and set them on a platter in the refrigerator.

When the phone rings in the middle of the night, child psychologist Alex Delaware does not hesitate. Driving through the dream-lit San Fernando Valley, Alex rushes to Jamey Cadmus, the patient he had failed five years before—and who now calls with a bizarre cry for help. But by the time Alex reaches Canyon Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, Jamey is gone, surfacing a day later in the hands of the police, who believe Jamey is the infamous Lavender Slasher, a psychotic serial killer. Wooed by a high-powered attorney to build a defense, Alex will get a chance to do what he couldn’t five years ago. And when he peers into a family’s troubled history and Jamey’s brilliant, tormented mind, the psychologist puts himself at the heart of a high-profile case. Because Alex knows that in a realm of money, loss, and madness, something terrible pushed Jamie over the edge—or else someone is getting away with murder.

Like all of the novels from Dr Kellerman I've read sofar, it shows
deep knowledge and experience in this field.I feel inspired to go
deeper than just reading the story. I learn a lot about mental and
emotional problems I can relate to.
I appreciate the author's sense of humor and musical embelishments.
That's why I keep coming back fore more.
P.S. English is my fifth language ànd I am far from fluent in it

Third in the Alex Delaware series and could barely put it down. Start to finish - there were always some surprising developments that I didn't see coming. I am reading the books in order just because I want to but they are able to stand alone for anyone looking for a good individual read.

Having only recently beginning the Alex Delaware novels, I've found myself intrigued, taken back, by the character's warmth and sincerity with his clients. This one in particular held my heart all the way through. He showed an endearing of Jamey to the point that it felt son-like.

The storyline was very good. Held my interest all along. I had hoped Jack's second son to be innocent, but it just made more sense to bring him along in the end. The wife was suspicious all along. I was really surprised by the revelation that "co-opted" the crimes in the end.

Just finished Book 3 after starting the series a week ago. The author is growing with each book: stronger characters, more reasonable, and more great reading adventure. I know I'm a late arrival but I am having fun.

This too-long, book kept me interested mostly because of the plot twists and the arcania about psychological things. But, on the other hand, a lot of the plot felt contrived with far too many serendpitous events which served only to enable the author to make another plot turn. Some of it was very un-realistic: a shrink wouldn't act the way Delaware does in some of the situations, and it's highly unlikely that any professional police force would allow Delaware to be so personally involved in much of the investigation and ultimate denouement. Diehard Kellerman fans will probably love this offering; I'm lukewarm about it.

I did like this maybe not as much as the 3 previous books. As was glad I had a dictionary attached to my reader or I don't think I would have made it through. Plenty of twists and turns.

avery interesting book, wish mr kellerman would stop taking so much space in describing clothing rooms etc, stay with the main plot.
A complex, fascinating mystery that will keep you reading and teach you new things about compassion, the human spirit, courage and the darkness of lives destroyed by insanity, greed and the need for love
