By the sixth book in a series, oftentimes a reader has a good sense of the author and can fairly accurately predict what kinds of twists and turns will be coming in the story. If not the specific twist, then the general idea of what will happen. Which casually-mentioned character ends up being the villain, where the group will go next, who ends up being a surprisingly helpful resource. That kind of thing. I had thought that I'd reached that point with Kay Hooper and the Special Crimes Unit - I was completely mistaken.

Sense of Evil is so sneaky, so deceptive. The reader thinks they understand what all the pieces are that are in play, and suddenly there's a twist so shocking that they go reeling.

After reading Sense of Evil the first time, I was completely blown away. I then went back and reread it, trying to see if there was some subtle clue that I missed that would have helped me figure out the who's-who mystery of it all. I am so impressed with Kay Hooper and how all the details were blended together in such a seamless way that you could make dozens of guesses and each one feels equally plausible. In this way, Hooper keeps the reader on the edge of their seat from the first page to the very last.

I love the superb way Hooper blends the mundane and the paranormal until it all seems like real life. The characters are so well-developed, and the cameos of characters from other books always spices things up! I am eager to read the next book in the series.

Tall, blonde, beautiful, Isabel Adams has a bloody vision where she is stabbed several times and in her blood she writes "Hastings" Isabel knows this is more than a crazy serial killer... SHE SENSES EVIL.
Her only flaw seems to be that she can't shield herself from every strong memory every place seems to hold. That makes for a great investigator but how long before it drives her crazy?

Chief Rafe Sullivan is having a few problems. The main one is there is a psychopathic serial killer who seems to be killing beautiful, successful blondes in his town another is that the FBI Agent he is paired with is prime bait for this killer. Rafe has psychic powers of his own. He doesn't even realize but by protecting himself he helps shield others around him also. When Rafe and Isabel are put together they cause an electrical spark when they touch...and who know what else will spark

Bishop sends in SCU Agents Isabel Adams and Hollis Templeton to find the serial killer who is currently butchering blondes but 10 years ago in Florida killed 6 redheads and 5 years ago killed 6 brunettes including a close friend of Isabel. Bishop and Miranda know this might mean death for one of the officers involved if they are to destroy EVIL this time

SENSE OF EVIL is a cross-genre book that doesn't really have an identity. As a result, the book is often muddled and ultimately unsatisfying in many aspects. At the same time, the book has a wonderful premise and fascinating characters with dark pasts. This paranormal suspense thriller has a dash of romance that shows promise but keeps the characters somewhat distant.

THE STORY: Isabel Adams is an agent with the Special Crimes Unit of the FBI. Isabel is clairvoyant and has come to town to help with a serial killer who has targeted blonds who are strong and independent. When she arrives in town, the police chief is incensed because Isabel herself is strong, independent and blond. Isabel doesn't intend to be a target, but expects that she will be. Isabel begins to have problems with her abilities and also is attracted to the police chief which complicates the investigation. Isabel is determined to find the killer as she has a dark history with evil and has been hunting this killer for a long time.

Rafe Sullivan is the police chief in town. He is determined to find the killer who is stalking the women of his town. He calls in the SCU to help but doesn't expect someone like Isabel. He is attracted to her and wants to protect her from danger. Rafe has his own secret that he is trying to keep from the psychics who have come to help.

Can Isabel and Rafe work together to find the killer before he finally gets around to killing Isabel and disappearing again?

OPINION: Rafe and Isabel have one of the most interesting stories of any of the couples in the series. Isabel has a sad, dark story involving her activation of her psychic powers. Rafe's story is just as compelling. If the romance had been allowed to take the forefront in this book, I think it would have been a great book. Instead, just when Rafe and Isabel reach the point where they should be resolving their relationship, Hooper decides to give the reader only the view of a third party. This creates a distance between the reader and the couple. It feels that there was a fear that this would turn into more of a romance than the author preferred and thus the romance was abruptly cut short. This left a major part of the story feeling unfinished and unresolved.

My complaint about this series of books when written this way is that there is not much to the suspense/thriller portion of the book once the relationship is removed. The book is not so scary that it will keep a reader up at night. The book is not a mystery that can actually be solved since all the information for the solution is kept secret until the end. The major twist in this book was one that I figured out early in the story because it seemed obvious who did the crime even if I could not figure out why. Without the romance, this book would not be interesting at all. In fact, the only reason I rated this book so highly is because despite my ultimate dislike of the resolution, I did really like the characters and the set up of their relationship.

WORTH MENTIONING: Hollis Templeton who is now working with the SCU is a supporting character. Hollis was a victim in TOUCHING EVIL is now becoming an agent. Her story is a compelling and dark one as well and I look forward to reading more about her in the future.

FINAL DECISION: I rate this book as highly as I do solely on the strength of the relationship between Rafe and Isabel. If their romance had been handled better, I would have given this a higher rating. Despite its limitations, I think of this book as an enjoyable one time read.

CONNECTED BOOKS: SENSE OF EVIL is the sixth book in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series. It is also the third book in the internal Evil Trilogy. The book can be read independent of the others in the series. The book most closely connected to this one is TOUCHING EVIL where Hollis is introduced.

STAR RATING: I give this book a 3.5 which means I'm not sorry I read it, but I probably wouldn't pick it up again unless I was reading the series over.

I have not been disappointed with any of Kay Hooper's books in the Bishop series. They are all bite your nails, grip your seat serious page turners. I can't put them down. Most books I will read a chapter then put the book down for a few days. I can not do that with Kay's books. I literally pick one up today and will be finished with it tomorrow. Her books grip you, pull you into the story, make your heart beat a little bit faster and keep your mind questioning everyone to find who the killer is.

The only other author I've enjoyed reading is Stephen King. I would match and perhaps even say that Kay Hooper surpasses Stephen King when it comes to the sheer drama of these books, the waiting and anticipation to see who the killer is. Her style of writing keeps you engaged throughout the book. If I could rate these books 10 stars I would.

Although I prefer the Bishop series, Kay's other books are excellent as well.
