Elmore Leonard wrote more than forty books during his long career, including the bestsellers Raylan, Tishomingo Blues, Be Cool, Get Shorty, and Rum Punch, as well as the acclaimed collection When the Women Come Out to Dance, which was a New York Times Notable Book. Many of his books have been made into movies, including Get Shorty and Out of Sight. The short story "Fire in the Hole," and three books, including Raylan, were the basis for the FX hit show Justified.

Like many Elmore Leonard books, Swag is a fast-moving crime story. The two main characters, Ryan and Stick, are cast from one of Leonard' standard molds: the criminals who aren't as smart as they think they are. They're a bit of an odd When used car salesman Frank Ryan catches Ernest Stickley stealing a car off his lot, ideas start going through his head. Soon, Ryan and Stickley are armed robbers and damn good ones. Like many Elmore Leonard books, Swag is a fast-moving crime story.

Swag (1976) finds Leonard moving for the first time into the more comic mode that would become his signature, as he charts the . Detroit native Gregg Sutter first met Elmore Leonard in 1979 and began working for him in 1981.

Unknown Man No. 89 (1977) spins a complex web of crisscrossing rip-offs and con games, with process server Jack Ryan, a typically laid-back Leonard protagonist, caught in the middle.

Swag, by Elmore Leonard (Phoenix, £. 9). There weren't any textbooks on armed robbery," this book says at one point, disingenuously. The only way to learn was through experience. Or, you might add, from reading Swag

For if this is not both a textbook for armed robbers, as well as a textbook on how to write about armed robbers, then what is? Think, too, of the two hitmen in Pulp Fiction talking about foot massages or hamburgers or whatever while actually involved in something quite ghastly.

They weren’t sure if bars were worth it and picked this one as a good place to find out. When they went. a half hour before closing, it was filled with the sound of voices and country music playing on the jukebox. The bar section was still very much alive, though the tables were empty now and the waitress was standing by the service station counting her tips.

The smallest of small-time criminals, Ernest Stickley Jr. figures his luck's about to change when Detroit used-car salesman Frank Ryan catches him trying to boost a ride from Ryan's lot. Frank's got some surefire schemes for getting rich quick—all of them involving guns—and all Stickley has to do is follow "Ryan's Rules" to share the wealth. But sometimes rules need to be bent, maybe even broken, if one is to succeed in the world of crime, especially if the "brains" of the operation knows less than nothing.

"Never watch a movie before reading the book" except with Valdez is Coming. The book and the movie overlap closer than any other book-movie combination I can think of. Seen the movie? Go ahead and still read the book. You'll get a bit more insight into a each of the characters. The actors in the movie fit perfectly with the characters in the book. (You also will learn who really killed Gay Erin's husband.) Fun quick read.

Great revenge story. Wonderful dialogue, just enough detail to set the scene for you but rarely any extra descriptions to get in the way of the story. Elmore Leonard has certainly created more nuanced characters than the ones you'll find here, but that won't stop you from hissing at the bad guys and rooting for Bob Valdez to give ' em what they have coming to them.

Ah, I miss Elmore Leonard. Whether you're talking hard-boiled, modernist tough guys or laconic, dangerous Old West characters, he really had the goods. This book is basically the old story of a 'harmless' righteous man who gets pushed too far and reverts to the younger, more dangerous Cavalry Scout he used to be. He doesn't become Superman, but he has more than enough talents and abilities -- and hardware -- to be the nightmare of Frank Tanner, a casually brutal boss-man who's got himself a small army that suddenly starts getting a lot smaller. Yeah, there's some brutality, but it's not terribly graphic, and anyway, this ain't a sparkly-vampire novel, it's a realistic story about the Old West, which was a place with some pretty rough edges. If you hate confrontations and hate westerns, stay away from this novel. Otherwise, it's a great read.

I have been on a Leonard spree, just finished Ride the Rap and Out of Sight. I have been wanting to watch Lancaster in Valdez is Coming, but thought I would read the book, since I haven't yet. As usual, it was a page turner.

Even though this came out originally in 1970, it's still a bit ahead of it's time. The lead character -- Robert Valdez is a low key peace officer and former Apache hunter. Leonard is brave enough to have the Mexican warrior-hero getting over on everyone who wants to just push him off and ignore him. But he doesn't ignore so easy.

Valdez just wants justice for a man's widow but can't seem to find anyone willing to do the right thing on their own. So Valdez has to "convince" them in his own way.

The real value in this story is that Valdez' mores and individuality begin to rub off on the other characters. He earns the respect of the beautiful woman and his enemies who, in the end, find themselves siding more with Valdez than their boss, learn that there is more to respect in a man than his money -- and that there are some things worth fighting for.

In the end, even Valdez has trouble remembering what it was all about. He started off doing something selfless and that turned into finding some things about himself and possibly even a future he never envisioned. But all this did not deter him from enforcing his own code. And finally, it is the code that wins out, even in the face of money and guns.

The ending is more about honor than vengance and is a bit of a surprise. It is a different message than you might find in most pulp westerns. But you have to read the book, I'm not going to spill 'em for you.

Total pleasure. I hate Leonard's books because nothing gets done until you finish it.

Elmore Leonard writes a western tale as well as he does anything else - which is to say, VERY well! While having components of the "wrong ed hero - revenge" format, Valdez Is Coming manages to be much more. A good tale, regardless of the venue, but an especially good story of the American west.

Most enjoyable book that I have read in a long time. I thought the characters, especially Valdez, were crafted very well. There is also plenty of action for those who like those type of Westerns. The movie with Burt Lancaster was good but I think the novel is better.

A good read; if you've seen the movie with Burt Lancaster, you'll be surprised at how closely the script follows the book. If you have not seen the movie, and like western settings and characters, then this is a good choice.
First read this just before the movie was released, in fact I still have the original copy with pictures of Burt Lancaster as Roberto Eladio Valdez. Bob Valdez, the quiet Constable of the Mex side of town, ressurects Roberto the Indian Fighter, when he is forced to respond to the brutality of a group of gun runners. They put him up against a wall and shoot at him and tie him to a cross, but his payback is like nothing they could imagine. Roberto does not fight, he simply kills, like the Apaches he learned to hunt years earlier. He is all ten people you never really want mad at you.
