Margery Louise Allingham (20 May 1904 – 30 June 1966) was an English novelist from the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction", best remembered for her hero, the gentleman sleuth Albert Campion. Initially believed to be a parody of Dorothy L. Sayers' detective Lord Peter Wimsey, Campion matured into a strongly individual character, part-detective, part-adventurer, who formed the basis for 18 novels and many short stories.

First rate mysteries without the murder--I found this refreshing. While Amanda and Lugg are lacking in the stories, Superintendent Oates is the main supporting character. The 13 stories are quite clever and IMHO satisfying, and many are humorous as well. Campion is in fine form, as stated on page 237: 'You're too bright,' he said. 'You'll blind yourself one of these days.' The most unusual feature, to my way of thinking, is the relationship between Campion and Oates--perhaps not as warm as some of the later Campion works. BTW, this is not considered a numbered Campion book, but was published between #10, "The Fashion in Shrouds" and #11, "Traitor's Purse" -- two of her best IMHO. Admittedly, if you prefer novels, you might not appreciate this book as much as I did, but I think things should be evaluated within their own context (in this case the short story). Otherwise, very few books would rate 5 stars (or maybe even 4) vs. Shakespeare or Hemingway etc.

For additional Campion short stories, Omnibus #1, The Mysterious Mr Campion, and Omnibus #2, Mr Campion's Lady each have 3 novels plus a Christmas story. Also, The Allingham Minibus is a collection of Allingham's short stories.

Not supposed to be great literature, but really well-told and delightful light short mysteries.

Frothy, smart and fun. This one goes on the shelf and will be re-read in a few year's time; Allingham's stories never grow stale.

While Agatha Christie gave us Hercule Poirot, and Dorothy L Sayers produced Lord Peter Wimsey, Margery Allingham created Albert Campion.
The Campion books are my favourites from this era, partly because Albert is such an attractive character, with a deceptively foolish expression and a genuine sense of humour.
This book is a collection of short stories, from the 1930s, and I give it four stars instead of five because the limitations of the short story format reduce the amount of plot development and the sense of place. Also Albert's sidekick and future wife Amanda is completely absent.
However the stories are still worth reading. My favourite's are "The Question Mark", in which a suspected blackmailer turns out to be a much nicer sort of person entirely, and "The Longer View", in which Albert blunders into a kidnapping case:
"Campion did not echo the impulsive promise. Long experience of criminals had made him cautious. But there was a rare spark of anger in the shadows behind his eyes"
Find a copy, sit down and enjoy.

I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but I had to read these because I love Ms. Allingham's Campion books so much. These are good stories. The only fault that I had with them is that we didn't get to see the wonderful Lugge in any of them. But we do see Campion and his friend Superintendent Oates of Scotland Yard. We also get some pretty good glimpses into the enigmatic Campion's life around the books. We see a lot of robbery and confidence crimes in these little stories, but they are each great in their own right. Ms. Allingham's skill of great characterization and plotting transfer themselves quite well to the short story venue. We also get really good glimpses of the social background of England during the time just before the Second World War when most of these stories are set.
