By mary higgins clark and carol higgins clark. He Sees You When You’re Sleeping. 1. On Monday morning, Olivia Morrow sat quietly across the desk from her longtime friend Clay Hadley, absorbing the death sentence he had just pronounced. For an instant, she looked away from the compassion she saw in his eyes and glanced out the window of his twenty-fourth-floor office on East Seventy-second Street in Manhattan. In the distance she could see a helicopter making its slow journey over the East River on this chilly October morning.

Mary Higgins Clark, very much like Agatha Christie before her, takes formulaic and makes it comforting . You get a relatively small bit of information and then the episode ends with The Shadow of Your Smile is not the best book of Mary Higgins Clark. I have read a lot better ones.

Mary Higgins Clark, very much like Agatha Christie before her, takes formulaic and makes it comforting (no gratuitous violence – are you following, James Patterson?), empowering (strong female characters – are you listening, Stuart Woods?) and fun (yes, Robert Crais, it doesn’t have to be intense from Formulaic. But still it kept me fascinated and I did not want to stop reading.

For some odd reason, a scene from Little Women, a book she had loved as young teenager, became fresh in her mind. she knows she will not get well, that the tide is going out. The tide is going out for me, too, Olivia thought. If Clay is right, and my body is telling me he is right, I have less than a week to live. What shall I do? Pulling on her reserve of strength, she got up slowly, put on a robe, and made her way to the kitchen.

At age eighty-three and in failing health, Olivia Morrow knows she has little time left. The last of her line, she faces a momentous choice: expose a long-held family secret, or take it with her to her grave. Olivia has in her possession letters from her deceased cousin Catherine, a nun, now being considered for beatification by the Catholic Church. These letters reveal that, at the age of seventeen, Catherine gave birth to a son and gave him up for adoption and they identify the father as Alex Gannon, a world-famous doctor, scientist and inventor of medical patents. Now, two generations later, thirty-one year old paediatrician, Dr. Monica Farrell, Catherine's granddaughter, stands as the rightful heir to what remains of the Gannon family fortune. But in telling Monica who she really is and getting what is lawfully hers, Olivia would have to betray Catherine's wishes and reveal the story behind Monica's ancestry. As the pressure of Olivia's impending choice weighs down on her, little does she realize that Alex Gannon's grand-nephews - who are currently exploiting the Gannon inheritance to fund their profligate lifestyles - will stop at nothing to silence Olivia and prevent Monica from learning the secret, even murder.

Noelle and her husband Eli have been drifting apart after their daughter was murdered. Noelle is on her way home one day when she has an accident. She wakes up in the hospital thinking she's a college student, not a mom and wife of 25 yrs. It seems like the perfect way for them to start over. But the men who caused the accident are out looking for her, Noelle can't remember even a small part of her life with her family, and Eli must deal with the consequences of his actions.

I love how the author tells two stories at once that tie together, but are also their own individual stories. The romance is there, but is more subtle than a typical romance. The author also weaves in a tiny bit of mystery, faith, and a small town feel. While this book is part of a series, it can definitely stand alone. One of the things that I appreciate most about this author and her books is how her books make me think. They are more than just a story.

I received this book free of charge from Tyndale in exchange for my honest review.
This deep haven novel is not a light & fluffy story but deep, realistic drama. I will be honest at first I couldn't really dig in to this one. Most likely because I was in the mood for something more humorous and breezy ... You know when you've had a rough few days you want to escape into something light & happy. This however was a story I am so glad I didn't set aside... In the end this was exactly what I needed to read. Warren speaks to some deeper truths & reminds us to trust God. Trust in God's goodness, His love, His faithfulness.

The Shadow of Your Smile is a story of people coping but not really living... They struggle through but have to learn many things like forgiveness (to others & yourself), love, commitment, and most importantly the lesson of letting go and trusting God.

What started out as ugh turned into something beautiful in the end. Isn't that what God does with our lives when we give them to Him... He brings beauty from ashes.
Mary Higgins Clark is a writer of history who also successfully writes mysteries; through the years I have read her mystery novels to give some foundation as areas of my own life slowly resolved themselves;
her books have been great places to visit and I'm so glad she wrote them; Ms. Clark has unusual insight into human nature and creates terrific dialogue between her characters. Their wardrobes are interesting, too; one can appreciate all of it and learn a lot. The mystery drags one right along nicely hooked.
This particular novel has some spiritual aspects that are needed right now, I would venture to say. Perhaps we need more like this, or like ECHOES, by Danielle Steele.about the substance of things unseen.
While Ms. Clark has access to the best hairdressers and photographers, as she has said herself, I can't help noticing her resemblance to photos of Queen Victoria. Quite a realm this time around...make of it what you will;
it is easier to read books than to write them. That being said, I continue to look forward to the new Mary Higgins Clark book(s) each year or so, and trust you do, too. Long may she write!
I fell in love with Susan May Warren's Deep Haven series last year and I was excited to read a new addition to this series, "The Shadow of Your Smile."

Noelle remembers nothing of her current life - her home, her husband, her family, nothing and not only that, but it is not the life she would have ever dreamed she's have. However she tries to remember and settle into the life that is supposedly hers. Noelle discovers some things along the way that make her question whether it is time to move on or to stick with the marriage and her family.

This is a great book to read! It is very realistic and I am sure that many individuals will be able to connect with Noelle and the other characters throughout the book. There is humor mixed in as well as moments that will tug at your heartstrings making this an excellent book that you will not want to put down once you start reading! So sit back, relax and escape to Deep Haven and the lives of the individuals that you will meet and fall in love with.
I have read most, if not all, of MHC's books. This one was the most convoluted. Too many characters and sub-plots. No mystery or suspense. Also, I've noticed that in her last few novels, she has introduced a very religious (Catholic) tone, almost seeming to try to "educate" readers regarding her religion. To me, it just seems too personal and out of place to be part of her novels. I've been disappointed in the last few novels by MHC. I loved the early ones, though. If you have not read any of her novels, start with "Where Are The Children," which was her first one--and, in my opinion, her best!
MHC fans should skip this one because it is a mess. Whoever actually wrote this novel had no idea of how to move the plot forward and, worse, how to bring it to a satisfying conclusion.

I had zero interest in the main character. Its just another one of MHC supposed sympathetic "heroines" except there is little reason to sympathize with her. Instead, it is a seemingly minor character that is redeemed at the end. I didn't know who to root for and, by the end, I really didn't care.

There are too many disjointed plot elements: out of wedlock pregnancy, religious miracles, financial scandal, blackmail, murder...and on and on.

Finally, as others have noted, it is poorly edited and fact-checking was non-existent. Everyone involved with this novel should be embarrassed.
Mary Higgins Clark has always been my favorite mystery author. This book held my interest and I was able to finish it in record time.

There were two things that made me feel that this book was not quite as good as some of her other books. There were so many characters included in the plot. I think it would have been a stronger story if there had been fewer characters. Secondly, I was able to predict the murderer earlier in the book than usual.

In spite of these two flaws, I still enjoyed the book very much. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
