Vanity Dies Hard (1966) was an early Ruth Rendell novel in which the future mystery writing superstar shows she was not averse to thinking outside the box even just out of the gate. While her investigator, a nearly middle aged woman, sounds like a typical lady mystery writer’s protagonist, Alice Whittaker is not exactly a Miss Marple style inveterate snoopster. For fans of Rendell who admire her books, the way she turns the genre on its head, this is another brilliant example of Rendell's ingenuity.

Vanity Dies Hard is a novel by British writer Ruth Rendell, published in 1966. Alice Whittaker was 37, rich but dowdy, with no career. Her life a lonely failure, she had got by with the one thing she did have - money. Then handsome Andrew Fielding came into her life, and just as suddenly her beautiful friend, Nesta, vanished from it - leaving a trail of confusing clues.
In 1965, Ruth also published Vanity Dies Hard, and The Secret House of Death in 1968. The 1980’s also began the Ruth Rendell Mysteries on television, and the filming of A Judgment in Stone, La Ceremonie in 1986. Ruth also received several awards throughout the 1980’s. During the 1970’s Ruth was able to complete six more Wexford novels, five more standalone novels, and two short story collections. In 1975 Ruth received the Mystery Writers of America Best Short Story Edgar for The Fallen Curtain; the first of many awards she would receive in the future. In fact, Ruth received more awards during the 1980’s than any other two decades combined.
