Convent on Styx book.
Convent on Styx book. This book is quite subdued by Mitchell's usual standard - a plot that goes practically in a straight line, and never a cross-dresser, supernatural happening, or cryptid monster to be seen. Still, I like it. It was written late in her life (according to the foreword) and while it still hangs together, unlike her very last book "The Crozier Pharaohs," it's definitely mellow in comparison to those written at the peak of her powers.

She needed to make certain that her veil was on straight and that she was not showing too much hair over her forehead. What a difference the Recommendations had made, she thought, to all previous conceptions of what the religious habit was to look like.
