SUMMARY: Chief Inspector Wexford is in China, visiting ancient tombs and palaces with a group of British tourists. After their return to England, one of his fellow tourists is found murdered. The book ends with The Strawberry Tree, a disturbingly evocative novella-length tale of lost innocence, set on the island of Majorca. It is a triumphant conclusion to a collection of horror stories that linger in the mind. 351. Published: 1996. Collected Short Stories. Four collections of some of Ruth Rendell's greatest original crime thrillers. 223. Published: 1994.

Acclaim for ruth rendell’s the babes in the wood. When it comes to the classic mystery. nobody does it better than Ruth Rendell. a beguiling storyteller. The San Diego Union-Tribune. Fans will be pleased.

In Babes in the Wood, Rendell comes closer to her standalone psychological suspense novels (some of which she publishes as Barbara Vine) than I recall her doing in past Wexford books. It seems that each family in this book is more dysfunctional than the next.

Ruth Rendell is at her best in this one - setting, Wexford's attitudes, quirky characters and a good old-fashioned murder mystery. Some subtle clues are planted as the story goes along and forgive her a few coincidences toward the end, but it's a good read.

Events had given him a dislike of the place. He had even thought of selling it. But could he sell it while the discovery of a body in a car in the grounds was fresh in people’s minds?

Events had given him a dislike of the place. She had been aghast, then furious. But we must have a country place, Pete. Think about it. We haven’t been there for two months. I don’t suppose we’ll go again before Easter, if then. The council tax still has to be paid, and Pauline

InThe Babes in the WoodRuth Rendell brings her keen psychological insight and rigorous moral sense to bear on Wexford's assumptions about the way people behave, including his own family, as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of two teenagers and their babysitter. There hadn't been anything in living memory like the kind of rain that had caused the River Brede to burst its banks and flood the homes in the area. This was an investigation which would call into question many of Wexford's assumptions about the way people behave, including his own family.

A woman phoned to say she and her husband went to Paris for the weekend, leaving their children with a - well, teen-sitter, I suppose, got back last night to find the lot gone and naturally she assumes they've all drowned.' There hadn't been anything like this kind of rain in living memory. The River Brede had burst its banks, and not a single house in the valley had escaped flooding. Even where Wexford lived, higher up in Kingsmarkham, the waters had nearly reached the mulberry tree in his once immaculate garden. The Subaqua Task Force could find no trace of Giles and Sophie Dade, let alone the woman who was keeping them company, Joanna Troy. But Mrs Dade was convinced her children were dead. This was an investigation which would call into question many of Wexford's assumptions about the way people behaved, including his own family ...

Really enjoyed this one. Mix in a car containing a body found in a quarry, a dysfunctional family and a separate dysfunctional marriage, a flood, a daughter with man trouble, and two kids - are they innocent babes in the woods or little monsters and Wexford has to figure it all out. Ruth Rendell is at her best in this one - setting, Wexford's attitudes, quirky characters and a good old-fashioned murder mystery. Some subtle clues are planted as the story goes along and forgive her a few coincidences toward the end, but it's a good read.

This is a fairly typical example of the Wexford/Burden genre. There is one large plot twist, and a somewhat unsatisfying subplot concerning Wexford's daughter Sylvia.
The novel is set during a time of flooding in Southern England, and there is a certain dreariness to the proceedings that is intentional.
This book supports the argument that Rendell, a very successful woman, was something of an anti-feminist.

A good solid Inspector Wexford novel, which is to say a REALLY GOOD crime story. The country is experiencing massive flooding (even the Inspector's own house is at risk) and two children are missing -- weeks go by, the rain keeps falling, the children remain unfound, but the plot inexorably thickens. The Inspector continues to age (rather more slowly than I am doing) but remains an astute analyst of a changing society, and of unchanging human nature. At the time I read it I was going through the nspector Wexford novels in order, and am nearing the end -- not a prospect that I relished.

I stay up late when I shouldn't. Just such engaging stories, fully developed characters, and plots unlike others. Really drew me in. I hate for each book to end!

"Who done it" rather than suspenseful which is what I prefer. A notch below Martha Grimes or Georges Simenon but on my must read list for her Wexford books.

Ruth Rendell was a master of both mystery writing and deeply drawn characters. Her Inspector Wexford tales are gems.

best crime writer
The skilled writing, the intricate plot, the fleshed out characters and in depth mystery built block by block kept me involved - I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend it to those of us who really enjoy a thought provoking murder mystery.
