The plot was slow moving and repetitious. David Hunt showed himself to be an excellent writer in the first book of the series, The Magician’s Tale, but his talent was not well served in this book.

The plot was slow moving and repetitious. The man who loved her served basically as an Uber driver.

David Hunt's first thriller about Kay Farrow, a San Francisco photographer with a severe form of color-blindness-The Magician's Tale-was so good that it would have seemed unrealistic to expect him to equal it. But Trick of Light comes close enough to earn high praise and a gasp o. . But Trick of Light comes close enough to earn high praise and a gasp of admiration. There are more luminous views of San Francisco seen in Kay's own heightened black and white, this time largely waterfront shots of illegal Chinese immigrants scrambling ashore or huddling in shabby apartments.

David Hunt has managed to write a first person female narrative in a way that probably few men can. He strikes just the right chord in Kay's poetic struggles with murder, love, identity, and most of all, the sense of wonder she finds looking through her camera lense. San Francisco itself plays a major role in this novel, and one can feel the vibrancy, as well as the lonliness, of this beautiful city.

2 cassettes / 3 hoursRead by Debra MonkA shocking and provocative new thriller from the author the national bestseller The Magician's Tale, again featuring color-blind photographer Kay Farrow as she probes a mysterious death in San Francisco's Mission District. When distinguished photojournalists Maddy Yamada is struck by a motorcyclist at two in the morning in a seedy area far from her Marina apartment, Kay Farrow's grief is tempered by suspicion.  What could have drawn the reclusive Maddy so far from home at such an hour?  Kay believes Maddy's work in progress - blurry, abstract images uncharacteristic of a woman famous for her unsparing clarity of vision - holds elusive clues, clues Kay is determined to decipher.Kay doggedly pursues a winding path to justice, negotiating a labyrinth of debauchery and dark desires, topping anything she encountered in the course of The Magician's Tale.

Best West
I was so excited by the impressively original "Magician's Tale" that I ordered "Trick of Light" in hardback, but it turned out that Hunt's bag of tricks was exhausted in his (or her, it's a pen name) first novel.
In the first book, heroine Kay Farrow was part of the atmosphere rather than a detatched interloper. The denizens of Kay's first mystery gave her a "street name" of her own, and she seemed like one of a group of colorful characters in the same millieu rather than a single colorful character injected into another millieu. Furthermore, the enemy in Magician's Tale was more personal, sordid, and realistic. In this book, the bad guy is a huge conspiracy of gigantically wealthy villains who control the law and can do all kinds of evil stuff without any fear of exposure. Just the kind of implausible idiocy the last book deftly avoided.
Basically, Trick of Light avoids the strengths of Magician's Tale -- atmosphere, intimacy, plausibility -- in favor of flashy martial arts action, supposedly colorful characters we've all seen before (the Disgruntled Viet Nam Vet, the Rich Evil Guy Who Controls the Law), and silly conspiracy theories.
David Hunt's writing is still good, but in the short time this series has been out, we've descended from the brilliance of the first novel (which I'd recommend to anyone) to a sophomore effort that's very much by the numbers.

David Hunt/William Bayer is an amazing writer. He can get a bit um, explicit in certain areas (the sexy-times), so if that bugs you, steer clear. Otherwise, he is a great author who weaves amazing stories that really, really, stay with you.

His characters are so approachable and fully fleshed out that you feel like you know them. These are some damn tightly woven tales. Very, very nice. The Magician's Tale is by far my favorite, but I have not yet been disappointed by Mr. Hunt/Bayer.

This book was not as good as the first one(the magican's Tale). Somehow, the characters weren't as vivid and the plot moved slower. Having said that, I enoyed the book and would read others with the same characters.

The second of Hunt's Kay Farrow tales is in every way as good as his first. Although this story is quite different from Kay's first adventure, its is as fascinating as The Magician's Tale. Hunt continues with Kay working several years after the first "nights out with Kay." She is still a freelance photographer -- shooting only in black and white. Kay is colorblind and finds this medium to be her best, as she believes she sees much more than the average person by not relying on color in the way that most of us do -- and indeed she seems to. Her best work is done at night as she develops a type of blindness in bright sunlight and tend to almost completely avoid it.
Although not working on any photographic story as engrossing as the prostitution scene Kay was documenting in her first book, this story, focusing on the death of her elderly mentor, is indeed one which quickly draws the reader in. Photography remains an important element in the story, as it was in the first book and some of the same very interesting characters/characters who were part of The Magician return with Kay.
Another score for David Hunt in bringing a dark, unnerving feeling to the entire story through the characters, night, the black and white photography and the main premise of the story. Kay's a wonderful protagonist as photographer cum detective!
