Anyway it is a very entertaining book. Dundas has a great sense of humor and a great memmory of names, times and places. He kept a diary while he was in the war and never looked at it til 50 years later when he wrote this book.

I truly regretted reaching the end of this book. I was fascinated by the first-person narratives of his war years, starting with his early experiences in flight training to being a survivor at the end of the war. As much as I know about pilots in WWII I'm still in awe by the age and lack of experience of these "boys" when they're moved into high performance airplanes. A good example is that, just in the nick of time, he was denied access to a Spitfire because it was discovered that he did not yet have 100 hrs flying time. You probably need to be a pilot to really appreciate this.
The Amazon price was so cheap (I paid $1.36) it was almost free. Best book buy for me in a long while.

This is a fascinating look at the life and experiences of the young World War II British pilot. It gives you a broad sweeping view of his years of fighting in the war. Dundas rights well and his narrative goes between aviation in the day-to-day experiences of learning to fly different aircraft, rising in his command responsibilities, and trying to keep his sanity. Very fine aviation book about World War II

I lived in England for two years in the mid sixties so I have a feel for English culture and their class system. This book gives a wonderful insight into both.

This was a GREAT read! I recommend it to anyone who wants to read about how it was from the beginning to the end a fighter pilots service.

This is an outstanding presentation of the author's WW2 years. The writing is good and the descriptions are outstanding. Highly recommended.

Both Hugh and Johnny had a great influence on the people around them. Positive and great leaders. Nice to read about his work with D. Bader and get another side of the story regarding Bader.

I decided to read and review this book because there was only one other review out there, and that review is so full of praise that I was convinced that it was written by the author himself or a friend (but not really). Anyway it is a very entertaining book. Dundas has a great sense of humor and a great memmory of names, times and places. He kept a diary while he was in the war and never looked at it til 50 years later when he wrote this book. It is a great first hand account of his flying experience from England to North Africa. Dundas has a knack for letting the reader really know what it's like to be flying the Spitfire in combat, dogfights that are over almost before they begin and endless sorties of which most are uneventfull. He is also very forthcoming with his feelings and fears, relationships with his comrades and he even includes reproduced letters that he had written home to his family durring the war. A very good read, right up there with First Light by Geoffrey Wellum.
Helped me get a good understanding of the pilots frying during WWII. Easy to read and follow the development of him.
