The defense team must unravel a mosaic of corrupt judges, crooked politicians, and the power brokers who control them to prevent McCauley from facing the death penalty. They have a few hopes to solve the case, but no guarantees. As McCauley's defense team maneuvers to protect him and his reputation, a not-guilty verdict is not enough. They intend to uncover the plot and prosecute the real culprit. But the killer has struck before, and there's nothing to stop him now.

I enjoyed this murder mystery and found it a compelling read. It grabs you at the beginning and holds your attention throughout. The author's style avoids unnecessary embellishments to the storyline, which keeps moving at a fast pace.

Set in Orange County, California, a bastion of radical conservatism with a reputation for fiscal incompetence, the story is all too believable. Fortuitous circumstances lead to an indictment for murder of the hero, personal injury lawyer Dennis McCauley. The falsity of the accusation results in mushrooming developments to contain and focus the blame on McCauley. Who actually did the killing and why recede temporarily into the background as McCauley and his criminal defense lawyer cope with pre-trial courtroom developments, which develop their own dramatic peak. Figuratively, one noose after another is slipped around McCauley's neck, and he needs and gets a lot of help from competent professionals and friends as he works his way to a resolution of the mystery behind his arrest.

An author writing about what he knows has an inside track on keeping a reader's attention. So it is with this novel, where a lawyer tells us about the justice system functioning in relation to the mystery. The reader becomes intrigued by how formal and informal parts of the system work.

I think you will enjoy this book and am pleased to recommend it.

I would definitely recommend this book. I was delighted to find that the characters are so well developed and storyline one that captures your attention and then keeps it! If you enjoy a good mystery at all, you will truly enjoy this one; and if you have any connection to the legal field you will find even a more significant import. I gave 4 stars only because it wouldn't let me give 4.5 stars!

Excellent read from start to finish. The reader will be captivated from the opening lines, and will not want to put it down until the mystery is solved. The character and plot development are detailed, giving the reader the impression of being present for each situation.
