Meet Detective Inspector J. Spider Rembrandt, who might be a real detective, or who might be a real spider, or who might be Salvador Dalí. Don't rule him out, though. Meet Goolcock, too. Is he DI Rembrandt's sergeant? Watson to his Holmes? He might be. On the other hand, he's the son of the Reverend Goolcock, who might be a leading suspect if he hadn't utterly vanished before the case even opened.

The main character—the protean and unkillable Spider Rembrandt—has six toes, sleeps in a grave, and dreams of congress with the pert and playful Reedy Buttons. Sucked into the vortex of Spider's philandering mind is a narrator—sometimes Spider's adversary, sometimes his victim—who lies upon a bed brooding on the absence of a nameless, brown-haired woman. He, too, is protean: full of passionate longings and homicidal tendencies. A surrealist film-noir that blends the forensic with the erotic, the seedy penny-dreadful and the lyric prose-poem, Mystery in Spiderville is one of the strangest, strongest and most arresting fictional debuts in years.

This is one of the strangest books I have ever read. A friend picked it up because he read the blurb on the back cover and thought it sounded good, then simply lost interest in it until I picked it up from his bookshelf.
I borrowed it and spent the first five chapters or so wondering what kind of Expressionist hell I had inflicted on myself. I could not understand just what was going on; how each chapter was tying into the next.
Still, I persevered, and it got to the point where I could not put the book down. It was like... I really can't describe the plot, or even the writing style; for some reason, as I read it, Salvador Dali paintings kept running through my head.
For example, one chapter is completely written in a made-up language. Another chapter details the antihero, Spider, pasting himself to the ground and refusing to move for traffic.
The prose was actually rather poetic, and it does not surprise me that the author is an erstwhile poet. As I mentioned earlier, I cannot really explain the plot or the style of the book adequately, but it was beautifully written and extremely evocative... I cannot forget some of the strange scenes painted in the book.
If you are open to new forms of writing, different styles... give the book a go. I think it is highly worth it.

By some bizarre twist of fate you've stumbled upon this book and rather than take the plunge and part with your money you needed to know other people's opinions first. That's fine. So let me tell you about a discovery I made - As with most young writers in pursuit of knowledge and entertainment a lot of my spare time is spent skulking around libraries and one particular day, before another mind numbing shift in work, I stumbled across A Mystery In Spiderville... `Never judge a book by its cover' is a piece of advice that 9 times out of 10 is worthless to people in a rush and having looked at the cover and the description on the back ("the décor is by Dali, the plot is a mixture of Breton and Burroughs") felt like I HAD to read this book.

... And I've read it at least six times since. Every time I do I find something new and different and influential. This book has influenced me more than anything I've ever read before and for that I've become permanently indebted to John Hartley Williams - Jesus, even the blurb on the back of a collection of his poetry (Cornerless People) is one of the best things (and best concepts of what story is) I have ever read in my life! Take that for what you will. With Spiderville, you start off slugging away at it and think "What the hell?!" to yourself as it follows no linear plot but I swear, by about page 54 you'll slowly but surely be getting to a point where you can't put the book down - the lyrical prose will make you laugh and smile to yourself.

This book is my secret, my own personal bible. But I pray, if you enjoy this book, to tell all your friends about it. If, as Paul Valery put it, "the true poet is the one who inspires," John Hartley Williams is the best of the best.
