Andrea Maria Schenkel. Translated from the German by Anthea Bell. First published in the United States by Quercus in 2014.

Andrea Maria Schenkel is the author of The Murder Farm, Ice Cold and Bunker, all of which are phenomenal . It has been translated from German by Anthea Bell, who has worked with Schenkel to provide a twisty, turning story of desire, death, and the correct attribution of a crime.

Andrea Maria Schenkel is the author of The Murder Farm, Ice Cold and Bunker, all of which are phenomenal bestsellers in her native Germany and have been translated all over Europe. She lives near Regensburg, Bavaria, with her family. Anthea Bell has won the Schlegel-Tieck Prize for German translation four times. She was awarded an . for her services to literature in 2010. This is the second of Schenkel's novels I've read; "The Murder Farm" was the first.

Andrea Maria Schenkel leads us through the atrocious murders of a family in Bavaria. The original murder happened in the 1920s, but for plot reasons Schenkel decided to move the murder to the 1950s. So it is a book based on a real murder but is actually written as fiction. There have been comparisons made to In Cold Blood which, as usual, is just a bunch of hyperbole. The only similarity that I saw to the Truman Capote book was the fact that both books were based on the murder of an entire family. The style that Schenkel uses is completely different.

Andrea Maria Schenkel. Where’s the knife, his pocketknife? He always has it on him, in his back trouser pocket. It’s been a fixed habit since the day he was first given that knife. It’s been a fixed habit since the day he was first given that knife t it the day he was confirmed. A present from his sponsor at his confirmation. A clasp knife, a beautiful, useful knife with a brown handle. It was in a box. He remembers every detail. He remembers the gift wrapping of the box. Thin tissue paper printed with flowers, garden flowers in bright colors

by Andrea Maria Schenkel. Are the villagers really so surprised by the multiple killings at the Damner farm? As different voices give their views, interspersed by the murderer's recollections, the book builds to its inevitable (but to me surprising) climax.

by Andrea Maria Schenkel. The changes in narration mean that you'll need to concentrate but any fan of noir crime should think the effort very worthwhile. Thoroughly recommended.

Andrea Maria Schenkel (born 21 March 1962 in Regensburg, West Germany) is a German writer. She published her debut novel Tannöd in 2006. She describes, in ghastly and suspenseful detail, how a small Bavarian village, called Tannöd, became the unlikely site of a horrific crime.

Andrea Maria Schenkel specialises in nerve-shatteringly realistic fiction. In this book we're nose-to-nose with psychopath and victim alternately. Monika has the nightmarish experience of being bundled into a car and taken to an old mill hidden in a forest. Here she is trapped first in an attic then, after attempting to escape, kept underground. Andrea Maria Schenkel specialises in nerve-shatteringly realistic fiction.

Andrea Maria Schenkel has done it in her first novel. The narrator takes us with him to all the pertinent people connected to the gruesome murders; of the farmer and his wife, daughter and her 2 children, plus a maid, which had transpired in the home and the barn. The narrator gave us a chance to know all the key players.

A whole family has been murdered with a pickaxe. They were old Danner the farmer, an overbearing patriarch; his put-upon devoutly religious wife; and their daughter Barbara Spangler, whose husband Vincenz left her after fathering her daughter little Marianne. She also had a son, two-year-old Josef, apparently the result of her affair with local farmer Georg Hauer after his wife's death from cancer. Hauer himself claimed paternity. Also murdered was the Danners' new maidservant, Marie, who was regarded as slightly simple. The Murder Farm is an unconventional detective story. The author interweaves testament from the villagers, an oblique view of the murderer, occasional third-person narrative pieces and passages of pious devotion. Officially the crime is unsolved, the narrator leaves the village unaware of the truth, only the reader is able to reach the shattering conclusion.

It is a mystery story, told in a new format. The characters are described. The statements of possible witnesses are taken.
The reader is the detective.

Drawback : requires careful reading and a good memory
I do not have these qualities, but still enjoyed the story

I never recommend. I will say : I liked it
Grillador
Overall a pretty pointless, though not terrible read. The landscape imagery is very nice, the characters are somewhat interesting, but the story is told mostly via police interview transcript, which makes for a mostly flat, somewhat cliche, and far too underdeveloped story.
Rare
I really got into this book. The writing was terrific, a suspenseful story, a bit confusing at times...or perhaps my mind wandered off...but all in all a three and a half. Quick read, took a couple of hours.
Gavigamand
Very good read. Interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat.
Anasius
By the end of this novel you will believe it actually happened. Told in a mater-of-fact interview style, the story still shows the horror of what each of us is capable of given the right circumstances.
Thetalas
Loved it
Couldn't put it down. Great read.
Interesting intermix of interviews of peripheral characters and narrators point of view.
Banal
Ausgezeichnete Geschichte. Elegant geschrieben. Anatomie eines kleinen, isolierten Bauerndorf nach dem 2ten Weltkrieg, von den Einwohnern erzählt, mit echten Stimmen.
I thought there would be some twist in the story; some suspense. There was none.
