The weak remnants of America are currently serving their role in preparation for the coming struggle. You wanted the rest of us tranquilized, and we paid one new-buck dollar a flashback minute to accommodate you. Our leaders turned away from the future decades ago-abandoning faith in the free market system, abandoning our worldwide responsibilities, hell, even abandoning our manned spaceflight program-and the rest of us turned the rest of the way from the future when we decided to go back to the past by using flashback.

Didn't think I'd like this one but I was hooked from page 1! A futuristic thriller in which Flashback is an addictive drug used to revisit scenes from the past. Set in 2036, it is a stunning portrayal of America, post economic downfall, taken over by the Japanese and in a state of violence and terrorism. Find similar books Profile. A standalone book about a dystopian USA, no prequel or sequel that I know of. I read the well printed and bound trade paperback of which I bought at a bargain price version.

The book is about the USA set in 2034 when 87% of the population is addicted to a drug called Flashback. The flashback drug is available in ten minute to twenty+ hour doses. The protagonist, a former police officer fired for his addiction, is living in a abandoned mall store that has been turned into cubicles. All he wants to do is flashback to the good times with his dead wife.

The book has Hillary Clinton winning the 2016 presidential election. She immediately enacts Medicare for All™ and lowers the Social Security full retirement age to 57. And, all illegal immigrants, current and future, become citizens. And a minimum wage of $15/hour. Those items bankrupt the USA government by 2024. Then things get ugly as the states start bankrupting also. By 2034, the USA is a third world country with illegal immigrants pouring into the country from the Caliphate of Europe, South America, etc.

The financial bankruptcy in 2024 causes a civil war in the USA. In fact, about a dozen civil wars and the secessions of several states. China also fails and proceeds into a civil war. Japan enters one side of the Chinese civil war using mercenaries from the bankrupt USA.

There is a real squicky scene early in the book. A group of 15 year old boys kidnap a fellow student, rape her, and use the flashback drug to continuously relive the experience. That hit my squick factor big time.

Scary take in an all too believable future. Makes you think about which direction our country is going. Fast paced and really awesome character development.

I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately the things and the parts of the plot that I found the most interesting are just filler to the main plot. The main plot seems watered down by the main character who I really ended up not liking at all. This book had a lot of potential and a great basic story line but unfortunately I do not feel it was very entertaining. Also the ending was very underwhelming. I did like the concept of Flashback and it presents a very believable near future, albeit scary.

Great Sci Fi story of near future. A murder mystery involving control of the U.S. by groups foreign and domestic. The plot is original and keeps you guessing.

FLASHBACK presents a fascinating dystopian vision of the world-in-general and America-in-particular 20-odd years from now. The U.S. has split into several ineffectual pieces; there is constant war in China; Israel has been nuked into near-oblivion by the rising "Global Caliphate"; Japan has a (to-be-revealed) agenda of its own, and so forth. Atop all of this, a huge portion of the world's population is passively addicted to "flashback," an ingredients-unidentified substance that allows people to relive their pasts with absolute clarity.

FLASHBACK is full of interesting turns and complications. I was engrossed even by the parts that meander, and engrossing the reader is most (or all?) of the game, right? The first 100-odd pages are marred by heavy-handed politilizations such as "Val and the others didn't know anything about [Columbine killers] Klebold and Harris, either, other than they were chillsweet killers about the age of the guys in this pathetic little flashgang who'd tried to off their entire school back. . .when dinosaurs and Republicans still walked the earth"(25). Many other reviewers have noted how the author's apparently conservative or Libertarian political views constantly intrude into this novel. Luckily, the intrusions and oh-aren't-I-clever puns decrease considerably as FLASHBACK progresses and Simmons becomes more involved with simply telling his story. While the ending is hurried and hard to buy, the middle portions contain some of his best characters and situations. The world Simmons presents here reflects an impressive imagination, and if you are willing to not let the politics get you down and take the worst with the best, you will probably find FLASHBACK worth reading. This novel is nothing if not unique.
