A thriller that took my breath away' bleachhouselibrary on Blacks Creek. This remarkable book is Sam's story, from his childhood in Belfast, membership of the IRA, time spent in Long Kesh internment camps and the Brinks heist and aftermath.

Karl Kane is a private investigator with a dark past. I will read all Millar's books. The book does have its violent sections, but they serve a purpose and are no greater than what's being published already. The writing is top notch, that should be the focus.

Years later, Karl has a chance to avenge his mother's murder by killing the man responsible. Be prepared...""-The Thrilling Detective Magazine ""Bloodstorm is a real find for aficionados of the classic hard-boiled novel who would like to see the form updated without it smelling like an anachronism.""-Booklist ""Powerful first of a new crime series.... The consistently tough prose should help gain Millar fans in the U.S. with a taste for the hard-boiled.""-Publisher Weekly

As you'll see there are very few reviews for any of Sam Millar's books and the reason is probably that serious readers of English and Irish crime noir would not give this author the time of day. "Bloodstorm" is atrocious. The writing is that of an amateur, the plot totally improbable. This book is a waste of time and money. If you want proof of just how bad Sam Millar's writing is, do not suffer the whole book as I did. Go to the last two chapters and read the dialogue between Kane and his father and the final scene between Kane and Inspector Wilson, it's appalling ! How any reader gave this book five stars is a mystery. If you want to read great writing by the cream of the crop of British and Irish crime writers, writers who Sam Millar is trying to emulate and failing, try the following authors. These are favorites with serious noir readers. You'll find myriad five star reviews for all their books written by readers that know the genre and appreciate superb writing.
Derek Raymond (factory series), Ken Bruen, Stuart Neville, Gene Kerrigan, Benjamin Black, Jonathan Dunne or Mark Dawson (Soho Noir series).
I just finished Bloodstorm, my first Sam Millar book, and promptly ordered samples of all the others on Kindle. Bloodstorm is a sustained mystery with a strong plot and strong characters. Highly recommended.
Nitty, gritty, sliced to the bone noir. I liked it, thought this is the start of a good series. But.... the next three not available on K.U !!! Not a good move Sam !!. Give us a couple of reads into Karl's private investigational skills, set the hook, then wait for the buy now button.
I am not one to write reviews, but I had to write one after reading the one posted review for this book. I just finished this book and found it to be a very engaging read. This is hard-boiled noir! I would recommend this book for anyone who likes the same authors that I do. My favorites include Ken Bruen (This will remind you of the Taylor novels, not a copy of them, but influenced by them), Jason Starr, Victor Gischler, Sean Doolittle, Duane Swierczynski, Anthony Neil Smith, Pearce Hansen , Charlie Huston, Thuglit, and the old UglyTown publications.
I don't want to recap the book, I just want to give the book its due. The book is dark, semi-violent, and hard core. If these are three words you look for when choosing a book, then grab this one and enjoy.
I am continuing my own crash course in noir fiction, classic and contemporary.
Reading the Prologue of Bloodstorm, I was shocked, as gang of men commit horrendous violence against a woman. I was ready to close the book and not read on.
Depiction of violence against women is a serious and controversial issue; but Millar is in not a misogynist and the violence in his books (against women or men) is central to the stories and to the emotional effects. The horror in the Prologue makes the evil REALLY EVIL, and the possibility of revenge cathartic.
In Chapter 1, detective Karl Kane appears; a likeable, non-sexist and nonviolent man. He is visited by a mysterious Mr. Munday, who wants information about a body found in the Botanic Gardens.
Later, the scene moves to a pub. A man having a beer meets a "pretty young woman." They have sex at his house, but eventually the woman pitilessly tortures and murders the man.
Two killings. Do they tie in to the events of the Prologue? The murders continue--with horrors made more grotesque by Millar's uncompromising style:
" . . . this thing had once been human, but now, removed of all skin, it resembled something from an abbatoir, freshly slaughtered with the stench of death and decay on it."
This repugnant evil keeps the reader really on edge, and it keeps the plot gripping. That's Millar's art, in all its imaginative fearlessness.
The story races toward an unexpected, gothic climax. As in much top-notch noir fiction, the climax gives the reader a strong sense of moral ambiguity. Questionable justice may be reached, yet the world remains an unfair place.
Although Bloodstorm is not for everyone, I do highly recommend it for fans of hard core noir who can stomach the type of rough but non-exploitative violence that expertly drives the plot and shakes the reader out of his/her comfort zone.
BLOODSTORM is a firm, five star crime, mystery, and noir
I am that type of reader that wants to read a review that
states the calliber of the book, and barely reveals any
of the events of the book. I do not want to know in advance
about anything. I want to discover, enjoy, be absolutely
shocked and have many "aha" moments. I want articulate
writing and heavy cultural influences.
You will get all of that and so much more in this book
featuring Karl Kane, a private investigator.
I read this book in a day and really had trouble
putting it down. You will want more, a lot more
from Sam Millar after reading BLOODSTORM!!
Bloodstorm is the first book I read by Sam Millar.

The man is genius, I read this book in one sitting, immediately started The Dark Place and read that in one sitting too.

After finishing The Dark Place I ordered every book of his I could find.

I think he's brilliant.
I'm a mystery/thriller addict having read over 500 titles by various authors. I rank Sam Millar right along side with Lee Child and John Connolly. I think the Eurpean authors are far superior to the American writers...I'm an American by the way. Do yourself a huge reading favor and order ALL his books.
