Nero Wolfe sprang full-grown from Stout’s forehead in that first book, and though in later years he would write non-Wolfe novels and even try his hand at another series character-from Wolfe to Fox should have been easy, after all-his doom was sealed (a melodramatic phrase Mr. Stout would never have employed) right from Fer-de-Lance.

Nero Wolfe has left his comfortable brownstone for the promise of a remarkably rare black orchid at a flower show—but before Wolfe and his perennially hardy sidekick, Archie Goodwin, have a chance to stop and smell the roses, a diabolically daring murder takes place right under their noses and puts a blight on the proceedings. Now Wolfe's fancy turns to thoughts of weeding out a murderer—one who's definitely not a garden-variety killer. Only then will Wolfe be ready to throw his weight into a second  thorny case, involving a rich society widow bedeviled by poison-pen letters—and a poisonous plot as black as Wolfe's orchids . . . with roots that are even more twisted.Introduction by Lawrence Block“It is always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore.”—The New York Times Book Review A grand master of the form, Rex Stout is one of America’s greatest mystery writers, and his literary creation Nero Wolfe is one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time. Together, Stout and Wolfe have entertained—and puzzled—millions of mystery fans around the world. Now, with his perambulatory man-about-town, Archie Goodwin, the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth is back in the original seventy-three cases of crime and detection written by the inimitable master himself, Rex Stout.

"Black Orchids" is the 9th book in Rex Stout's "Nero Wolfe" series. It's really two novellas ("Black Orchids" (1941) and "Cordially Invited to Meet Death (1942)) packaged together and loosely linked by some black orchids. Both of these novellas are excellent. I don't usually like short stories or novellas. I find them too truncated and abrupt. But, these two put that preference to shame. They've got the usual Stout excellence and instead of feeling rushed or choppy, they feel like a tightly wound spring. So, once again, I'm rating a Nero Wolfe book at an Excellent 5 stars out of 5.

I once had been deluded into thinking that I had read all of the Nero Wolf novels. I'm happy to realize that I was mistaken! The modern, corpulent, version of Sherlock Holmes has been my favorite private investigator since I picked up and read the book entitled Fer dear Lance, which is the first Nero Wolf novel published. I'm also delighted to find that the late Mr. Rex Stout's world famous PI has been rescued from oblivion by another author named Robert Goldsboro. The fat man lives on! Hurrah!

Black Orchids: It is a wonderful read! I believe everything that is done in this mystery could happen in real life. Having been to more than one flower show with all types of flower Enthusiasts: I know how excentric they are to all others. They are true Prima Donas.
However, I do know Black Orchids. I love them, You do have to be careful with Orchids. Sometimes the fragrance can be overpowering. They are beautiful.

We already know that in the second story with Chimps running around, that today, you are more likely to run into a Tiger, Lion or maybe a Polar Bear. People are eccentric, and place others in dangerous situations. I felt for the characters. I had not thought that such behavior would be shown to be a Hostess with the Most.

Wonderful!

I feel silly reviewing Nero Wolfe books, though some are better than others. This one is great.

This volume seemed to be all ever the place. Just when I thought I was caught up, whole events were added to change the direction, but when I finally got into the later chapters I could see where all the parts fit! Still a very long read.

Funny, entertaining, steady pace that holds your attention (well, holds mine at any rate) throughout the book. In other words, typical Nero Wolfe fare.Love the characters, the writing style, the wit and the ingenuity involved in each novel, even after 50 years of reading and rereading the entire series multiple times.

Just finished this yesterday and was disappointed when I was done. Two mysteries with one unifying point: black orchids. I didn't really like the characters in the first one but I enjoyed the plot. I really like the eccentricities of the second story. Caught me off guard with the solution! And one character even touches Nero Wolfe without making him cringe! Have fun with this one - I envy you starting it fresh!
I love Rex Stout and can read and reread his Nero Wolfe novels over and over. The contrast between current detectives and Nero Wolfe are truly fun, the sex is almost none existent , meaning you have to read between the lines and use your imagination. How refreshing for it not to be laid out for you, blow for blow. The violence is on the same level. Archie, Wolfe's 'right-hand man' is an interesting character, rough around the edges, but thoroughly likable. All of these novels are fun to read and the the plot and character development are great.
