A Stolen Season book. Probably because some of the other Steve Hamilton books have left me cold and I forgot how much I enjoyed the Alex McKnight series. Sep 07, 2018 Karen rated it it was ok. On a cold, miserable night in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a night.

I still have some of the business cards he had made up. Prudell-McKnight Investigations, his name first because it sounded better that way.

Chapter One. From the beginning, everything about the night was wrong. I still have some of the business cards he had made up. Or so he said. With the two guns on either side of the card, pointing at each other.

Written by Steve Hamilton. Narrated by Jim Bond. When Alex McKnight helps rescue the passengers, he finds three men. The driver is out cold, the other two are dazed but conscious. When they're all finally back on dry land and sent away in an ambulance, Alex figures he'll never see them again. He couldn't be more wrong. It's not enough that Natalie Reynaud, the woman who has become the center of his life, is five hundred miles away, working a dangerous undercover operation in Toronto.

Edgar Award–winner Steve Hamilton takes his acclaimed series to new heights in A Stolen Season. If you thought you knew Alex McKnight and how far he'll go for the people he cares about. On a freezing night in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a night that wouldn't feel so unusual if it weren't the Fourth of July, a boat plows full speed into a line of old railroad pilings in the shallow water of Waishkey Bay. After Alex helps rescue the passengers, he figures he'll never see them again.

Steve Hamilton is one of the most acclaimed mystery writers in the world, and one of only two authors (along with Ross Thomas) to win Edgars for both Best First Novel and Best Novel. His Alex McKnight series includes two New York Times notable books, and he’s put two recent titles on the New York Times bestseller list. He’s either won or received multiple nominations for virtually every other crime fiction award in the business, from the Private Eye Writers of America Shamus Award to the Anthony to the Barry to the Gumshoe.

It made a terrible kind of sense. e of hunting rifles in Canada. But handguns, concealable weapons, little submachine guns you can tuck into your jacke. hat was a different matter. What Canada did have in abundance was drugs. Especially painkillers.

It’s not enough that Natalie Reynaud, the woman who has become the center of his life, is five hundred miles away, working a dangerous undercover operation in Toronto. Now Alex has even more problems when the men from the boat get tangled up with his best friend, Vinnie. It’s all Alex can do to keep Vinnie from killing them or being killed by them. With Vinnie in danger on one side of the border, and Natalie in just as much danger on the other, what comes next will be the absolute darkest hour of Alex’s life, beyond anything he’s ever faced before.

Upper Peninsula of Michigan resident, Alex McKnight learns that no good deed goes unpunished. When he risks his life and saves three men from drowning in a boat wreck, instead of thanks, he gets threats. It seems a yellow box filled with valuables was lost in the wreck. The men ask Alex if he took it. They threaten him, and beat up his friend Vinnie who had a run in with these men in the casino before the wreck.
If that isn’t bad enough, Alex’s girlfriend, Natalie, goes undercover to catch some dangerous gun runners. He’s worried about her safety and tells her to get out of the sting. But she’s a police officer, and this is her chance to catch some very bad people. Things are only going to get worse for Alex and for Natalie. Soon he’s trading punches with gun runners and drug runners. She’s afraid the criminals have made her and her partner. How can it get more dangerous? It does.
Spoiler: Someone close to Alex gets killed.
I found the story interesting in spurts. I’d turn the pages and wonder what happens next, then there would be twenty to fifty pages of meaningless talk, and ice on broken knuckles and assorted bruises. The movement of the story stopped. Sometimes its hard for readers to know why Alex keeps going after bad guys. He’s not a working private investigator. He’s a guy who rents out cabins and attracts trouble. He’s got a P.I. license, but he isn’t in the business. Trouble just finds him.
The premise behind this novel is good; the Yooper detective is a great character. I grew up in the Upper Peninsula, so I know the type of people the area attracts. They aren’t all bad guys, but bar hopping is the number one past time. And the weather is often pretty bad even in July, though jokes about the U.P. weather were overdone. In some ways the Alex McKnight novels take me back home.

First, for all of the Alex McKnight lovers out there, I enjoyed reading this book. Steve Hamilton knows how to write, keeps the pace moving, and creates suspense. So that's the good news. I honestly couldn't take a steady diet of his writing (disclaimer, this is the only one of the Alex McKnight novels I've read). It's pretty formulaic, the characters are pretty much one-dimensional, and the plot events are at times unbelievable. Alex too often takes borderline idiotic risks which would get any normal character killed and Hamilton somehow finds a way to have him survive, too often with a slap my forehead "c'mon, you gotta be kiddin' me!" chain of events. It's paperback fiction, and a good beach read. Good pace, action-filled, but like most books of this genre the good guys are always putting themselves in danger for usually nothing more than altruistic reasons, magically surviving, and the bad guys are, well, very predictable.

I did read his previous novel "The Lock Artist" which I thoroughly enjoyed, and which prompted me to read this book. The Lock Artist shows Hamilton has better in him.

It's the 4th of July on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it's cold, rainy and foggy, so much so that one can't even tell that it is summer. Alex McKnight is making an attempt to be social and listen to former partner Leon Purdell's band when he finds himself witness to a boat wreck. Not only did three men wreck and antique Chris Craft wooden boat worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on a night that no one should have even been on the water, but as a thank you for saving their lives they come back the next day and accuse Alex of stealing a lock box that had been on the boat. Vinnie, Alex's Ojibwa Indian friend and "brother" comes to him and fills him in on a problem with some of the local tribesmen being forced to manipulate the system for painkillers, since they get them for free, and when Alex digs deeper all of this traces back to the the the the three men on the boat. Meanwhile, Alex's girlfriend Natalie, a Canadian cop, goes under cover to work on an arms dealer in Toronto and danger lurks around every corner.

I love Steve Hamilton and have since I flew through A Cold Day in Paradise (Alex McKnight Mysteries). This man makes you fall in love with his characters and you can visualize the Glasgow Pub and know the Alex is inevitably going to get hurt. I cried while I was reading this book because I had gotten so attached to the characters that I honestly felt bad for Alex. That is the mark of a master, when you are transported away from yourself and you can see your setting without even having to try. I cannot wait for his next book.

This was the book in this series that finally killed it for me. I was already getting tired of how incredibly stupid this guy is (the protagonist) but this was beyond what i could take. I am now onto other authors and series. All of these books are "okay" at best with slow stories and really stupid scenes. I mean how many times can one guy do the absolute wrong thing and come out just fine? Alex is an idiot and not someone I can root for or care about.

After reading "A Stolen Season" by Steve Hamilton I'm tempted to drop down a notch all books I ever previously rated... or at the very least to petition for a new A+ rating. This book, the seventh in Hamilton's Alex McKnight series is, in a word, exceptional. It is written with believable and convincing dialogue, it is well-paced, and it is injected with perfectly timed suspense... driving the reader forward... impelling her/him to turn page after page after page. Yet there is more to this story than "bells and whistles." In "A Stolen Season" Hamilton also affords McKnight to explore what is meaning for in and to his life. And then, just when he thinks he's found some answers...

Steve Hamilton will keep you guessing. I also felt as though I was right there with Alex McKnight. If you have ever lived in or been to the Michigan UP, this book series will take you right where the action is Good Reading!
