I rate this is as one of the best Perry Mason stories. It's rather unusual in that Perry doesn't appear until a quarter of the way through the book, and the courtroom drama doesn't start until almost three quarters of the way through. But the plot draws you in, holds together well, and is clever without being over-complex.

Erle Stanley Gardner wrote over eighty Perry Mason books, and I’ve read about three quarters of them. They are amongst my favourites when it comes to a bit of light, escapist reading. I have found that most are very good, a few are really excellent, and just a few are disappointing. If you are not already familiar with them, this one is certainly a good place to start. You might end up as addicted to them as I am!

Critics have said – rightly, I suppose – that these books are not great literature. There is not much depth of characterisation; sometimes the plots have weaknesses or are too complex; and Gardner certainly does not waste any time on the sort of long, descriptive passages that you get in Raymond Chandler’s writing.

But if you want briskly-paced page-turners, these are the books for you. They do not feature the grim blood, gore and “darkness” of so much modern crime fiction. Instead they grab our attention and give us enjoyment through Perry Mason’s quick-wittedness and the brilliant and fast-paced dialogues, especially the courtroom dialogues.

Incidentally, although Chandler’s Philip Marlowe books are rated as better literature than the Perry Mason novels, I now prefer the latter. On recently re-reading Chandler’s stuff, I have found that the long descriptions and Marlowe’s constant smart-aleck comments can become rather tiresome. And despite the alleged lack of depth of characterisation in the Perry Mason stories, I feel that I “know” the central characters - Mason, Paul Drake, Della Street, Lieutenant Tragg and Hamilton Burger - well.

The Case of the Gilded Lily / The Case of the Dubious Bridegroom

Erle Stanley Gardner was once "the World's Greatest Author", his novels outsold the combined totals of his rivals. Gardner wrote the "Perry Mason" novels and other works. Gardner and others formed "The Court of Last Resort" to investigate the wrongfully convicted. The background tells of the era, the monetary figures date these stories.

"The Case of the Gilded Lily" (1956) is about Stewart G. Bedford, a wealthy business man who recently married a much younger woman. Binney Denham visited him one morning and asked about a "loan". Binney has police records of Stewart's new wife Ann! Bedford loves his trophy wife and enjoys the envy and admiration of his friends. A phone call at night insists on getting the money the next morning. Bedford gets traveler's cheques, visits Binney and drives away with Geraldine Corning to a motel as part of the pay-off. A drink causes Bedford to fall asleep, as if he was drugged. When Bedford wakes up he finds Corning gone, and Binney shot dead in the next room. Bedford's secretary drives there and picks him up, she has retained Perry Mason. Perry gets the story from Bedford and his secretary Elsa Griffin, and advises them what to do. Paul Drake begins his investigation. Elsa will return to her motel unit to lift any of the fingerprints left there by an unknown visitor. The motel manager accurately described the man and the girl he was with. Perry who was the unknown visitor. That person denied being there but admits to other actions. The police reach Bedford. Against Mason's advice Bedford makes a statement and the police take him in. Mason talks to Bedford in jail and listens to Bedford's theory of the crime. The shadow on Grace Corning reports she is leaving for Mexico under a disguise. Drake's operatives get fingerprints from Grace Compton's apartment. The motel manager testifies at the trial so we learn new facts about the events (he saw Binney visit, and a "prowler" that he described to the police). A police officer tells of searching the garage to find a hidden gun. Elsa visits Perry to tell of her suspicions; as she leaves she meets Sgt. Holcomb and offers her information. When the trial resumes Elsa testifies about the fingerprints she lifted; they do not match the People's Exhibits! The police fingerprint expert is called to settle this dispute. Then the motel manager takes the witness stand to identify Mrs. Bedford! But Perry asks a few questions that expose new facts. Perry explains the events to his freed client.

"The Case of the Dubious Bridegroom" (1949) begins with Perry Mason is working alone late at night doing legal research. After slumbering he is awakened by noise from the fire escape. A young woman is there, and Perry invites her inside. Does she have a reason for her visit? What was the metallic object she threw into the alley? When Perry tries to investigate her story she slaps his face and jumps into a taxi to escape. The next morning an item in the Gossip Column refers to this event. Did Virginia Colfax slip one over on the great Perry Mason? Perry tells Edward Garvin US courts are not legally obligated to recognize Mexican divorces. Is he a bigamist? What will his first wife do? Paul will find Ethel Garvin. Perry notices something odd about a proxy statement sent to stockholders. Will the new proxies create hell for the company? Will Ethel file bigamy charges against Edward? A Mexican marriage after a Mexican divorce makes it legal in the US. Perry learns that Edward Garvin is no longer married to his first wife! Perry rushes to Oceanside to observe the body in the car. Della notices a missing hat. Perry finds a lead to Virginia Colfax. Her story has plenty of facts, and maybe some clues to a shady operation. The police arrive. Is there a clue in what a witness saw? [Those who drive in the sunny southwest know of the need for sunglasses.] Perry learns more about a stranger in the country. Garvin is tricked and then arrested. Can anyone positively identify two cars that look alike in the dark? The trial starts and Perry questions a prosecution witness. Can the tracks of a car show that it was waiting? Will the Prosecutor try to pull a fast one over Perry? Eyewitness testimony can be manipulated [the main cause of false convictions]. Could Perry's client have lied to him? The courtroom scene is the high point in this drama. Will Perry surmise a theory to explain the conflicting evidence and save his client? Rechecking the events provides a new clue. Perry questions a witness for testimony that frees his client. The last chapter ties up the loose ends to this complicated story. Perry has the last laugh.
