Ed McBain (October 15, 1926 – July 6, 2005) was an American author and screenwriter. Born Salvatore Albert Lombino, he legally adopted the name Evan Hunter in 1952. While successful and well known as Evan Hunter, he was even better known as Ed McBain, a name he used for most of his crime fiction, beginning in 1956.

Ed McBain (October 15, 1926 – July 6, 2005) was an American author and screenwriter. He also used the pen names John Abbott, Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ezra Hannon, and Richard Marsten, amongst others. His 87th Precinct novels have become staples of the police procedural genre.

If you're considering reading an Ed McBain book I wouldn't advise starting at the beginning of the series. The first three were written in 1956 and although they're great they come off a little dated. The series ran from 56 until 2005!

Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation.

Snow whips through the city’s streets like lethal daggers when a young actress leaves the theater after her latest performance. She walks home instead of taking the subway, and soon the snow on the ground is stained red with her blood. Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation. He was the first writer to successfully merge realism with genre fiction, and by so doing I think he may actually have created the kind of popular fiction that drove the best-seller lists and lit up the American imagination in the years 1960 to 2000.

One night. One shift. No rest. Featuring the 87th Precinct’s entire cast of characters, this Halloween takes them into the darkest corners of depravity the city has to offer. And sometimes, surviving is the greatest treat of them all. From a liquor store hold-up ending with a dead owner and four costumed “kids” making off with the money to the pieces of a man showing up around the city, the Day of the Dead is turning the streets into a carnival of violence and murder. Meanwhile, a magician disappears in a stunning final act, and Detective First Class Eileen Burke poses as a hooker to lure in a serial killer. The question is, will the detectives all live to see the dawn of November?Newsweek declares bestselling author Ed McBain “has virtually reinvented the police procedural.” Interweaving rich characters, taut plotting, and sharp dialogue, Tricks is a multi-character masterpiece.

An interesting variation on McBain's usual format. In retrospect, it struck me as a compendium of three short stories whose pages were shuffled together then bound in book form. Three separate story lines interwoven, but unlike many of McBain' s novels, there is no convergence into an appropriate conclusion. Instead, the individual plots continue independently, except for intermixed dialogues and events that, at times, can be temporarily confusing until you get to the Ah Ha moment and you pick up the flow again. All in all, a good read, particularly if you have read more than a few of the preceding 87th Precinct novels because you get to encounter pretty much the whole squad spread across the three story lines.

This novel was written in a strange manner that made it a bit confusing to follow. There were several conversations happening on top of each other, but in most cases the various speakers weren't identified. I think he tried to mimic the chaotic sound of an open "bull pen" area at the precinct. I applaud any author willing to take such risks and try something new - especially an author well established who could just continue the same successful formula. For that reason I'm glad I read it. 3 stars may be overly generous, but I'm in a generous frame of mind because of the risk he was willing to take.

I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I will be looking for the next edition of the precinct stories by this author. It had just the right amount of suspense without overdoing it. I was totally invested before I even realized it and then I couldn't put it down.

This is the first novel I've read by Ed McBain. I purchased it quite frankly because Amazon offered several of his books in the Kindle edition for a very cheap price. Also, I love a good mystery/thriller so I figured, what the heck. I found this book to be a very fun quick read with interesting characters. I really liked how the author tied together the concept of "tricks" with the different story lines in the book from the Halloween theme, to the prostitution angle, and the magician. I have moved on to another Ed McBain novel. If you like Sue Grafton books you will like these.

This book was a good filler for time. It kept me interested. It was not spectacular but it was enjoyable reading. It was quite well written. The result was predictable.

One of my favorites of the outstanding 87th Precinct series. McBains humor, pace, and character work are really outstanding, and even Bert Kling (probably my least favorite of the Precincts cops) does a worthwhile turn.

Ed McBain is always engaging, keeping you interested from the very first page. The characters are always believable, and constistent in their actions, and reactions. There is never a worry about reading a book by Ed McBain, as he is a consummate story teller, keeping your interest, and never wasting you time with a story that doesn't make sense, and is intelligent from first page to last.
Having been in law enforcement for 26 years I loved the dialogue between the detectives. It was great!
