With this guide, you don't need to be an archaeologist or an ancient historian to get the most out of your trip to Greece, but if you are, you will likely find sites you hadn't before considered. It is thorough in its information about all the important sites, plus many gems of lesser-known sites. Information includes walking and driving maps, guided room-by-room tours of museums, ancient and modern histories, sidebars on important historical figures and events, and even references to modern scholarship. All time periods are covered from prehistoric mounds and ancient temples to Frankish castles and Byzantine and modern monasteries and churches.

This is excellent, particularly the section on Thessaloniki. I bought this book before going to this important city.

I have used Blue Guides for 35 years but this edition disappoints. Very skimpy on the archaeological remains, which is the chief reason for buying a Blue Guide. Moreover, it contains errors, gives vague, often misleading directions for finding things, places its maps inconveniently and, since it deals only with the mainland, leaves the visitor to Athens with no information about nearby islands such as Aegina (which older editions included). Avoid.

The best guides. Good descriptions with history, art and architecture. A few tips about restaurants and hotels are a bonus

This book was very helpful for my travels. It gave me great the information on various sites I was visiting.

A disappointment for those of us old enough to remember the Blue Guides of a generation and more ago. I just returned from a trip around the Peloponnese, wishing I had brought my BG from 1970 instead of this pale reminder of the detailed information included in that earlier edition. This new version wil doubtlessly satisfy a traveler who is not already immersed in the archaeology and history of Greece, but that older one, with its differing fonts offering greater and greater levels of scholarly detail, was much more informative, engaging, and useful. If you can find the old edition, I'd recommend buying it instead.

"Blue Guide Greece" is wide-ranging, but its site descriptions and directions are often very skimpy; it should be supplemented with the excellent "Greece: an Oxford Archaeological Guide", which doesn't attempt to cover as much ground but does go into much more detail on the places it does mention.
The business of travel guides thrives on the tourist. Books fly off the shelves to couples and families traveling to popular destinations for the first time. They are eager to quickly learn about the hottest spots, the coolest beaches, and the tastiest restaurants. But in an age where people can obtain these quicks facts on smart phones and Apple products, what could the travel guide possibly offer? Authors of travel guides have to write books that no ninety cent app is going to cover. Furthermore, these guides need to provide more information than any map, tour, or phone could explain. In addition to this problem, enriching travel is deteriorating due to the readily availability of planes to all forms of travelers. Many travelers consider a layover or a quick look around a location and a meal in a popular restaurant as `traveling'. Blue Guide Publishing is beginning to provide a guide that will improve these situations.
The ideal trip should be one of intellectual immersion. Ideal meaning, a perfect balance between relaxation and adventure. Travelers searching for the cultural distinction of a location will enjoy a trip more if they understand the distinct and complex history of a location beyond the simple hotel pool and bar. An area as old as Greece needs to be understood by its beginning to be full embraced as a `wanted' destination and enjoyed trip; furthermore, by grasping how locals live and work, a proper guide will allow an explorer to progress from a `tourist' to a `traveler'. Blue Guide's Greece (The Mainland) will provide far more than the basics for a traveler and allow the intellectual explorer to learn. A typical travel guide of Greece, like Frommer's Greece, provides easy to find hotels with star rankings, basic maps of popular cities, and the occasional `fun fact' about a statue or temple. Although easy to navigate, this guide will not provide a traveler with the information necessary to make Greece intellectually satisfying. A truer guide should treat every building, every sign, as a definition of the culture. Blue Guide describes every location or city as a museum, describing the story of what it was , what it is, and what will become of it. For example, Pnyka the Hill of the Nymphs in Athens has a whole section in the book. The chapter describes the location and a detailed history of its estimated beginning (4th c BC), how it has changed throughout the years due to religion, and what is there now for visters. When a traveler reads Frommer's guide, they can navigate themselves through a Greek city and not get too lost, but when they read Blue Guide's guide, all of the myths and legends come to life and allow the traveler to begin exploring. A guide suitable for the modern, intellectual traveler needs to provide more than the basics, it must inspire a traveler to delve deeper than the popular tourist locations and immerse themselves in the location's culture.
Blue Guide, full of long illustrated descriptions of cities and temples, is not the first guide a typical traveler would pick up. This guide is for the intellectual traveler, perhaps a solo traveler, or a professor, a backpacker, or a college student. Generally, this kind of traveler needs a stronger, larger budget than the typical family vacation. With over six hundred pages and a cost of over thirty American dollars, only the intellectually-seeking traveler would want to buy this guide over others. However, when a curious traveler that is not necessarily a intellectual opens the pages and begins to read a chapter, the smart phones will be tossed aside! Each temple comes to life with a description of what god it was built for, a detailed map of each room and what once occurred there. The illustrating, almost storybook, tale of each location makes each city seem better than the next.
This guide educates, excites, and inspires. It teaches all forms of the culture from the Dionysian Festival that celebrates theatre in the heart of Athens to the ancient pots that fill the country and what the shape of that pot means. This guide is far more than just a fact sheet of the country; however, some might argue that this information is not necessary to explore Greece. But we must reevaluate what we consider traveling. To fully understand something, for example ourselves, we explore our history. Our nationality, our family tree, our religion are all aspects that help us fully embrace ourselves. When traveling, should we not do the same with where we are staying? Blue Guide allows the traveler to do just that as in depth as possible. This new grasp on traveling is exciting and immersion inspires one to reevaluate their own life and home, unlike other guides.
One can only hope to inspire travelers as well as this Blue Guide of Greece does. A traveler can only buy magnets and postcards for so long until they realize that they want to know more than what is popular at a location. Exploring beyond the path that tour guides walk us through, staying at hotels that serve the locals, exploring the temples and ruins of the people before us are all necessary actions to fully `visit' a location. Other travel guides edit and censor one's visit with comfort sites that are not very different from our homes, but shouldn't the traveler long to explore beyond that? Blue Guide is not just a guide, it is like a textbook full of information and history, it is a spoken tale full myths and legends that built civilization, is it the inspiration to travel fully. Those travelers that long for greater trips than the simple beach vacation at a five star resort, that crave the depth and complexity of a city, that hope to come home with a new found wisdom should purchase Blue Guide's Greece and truly recreate what it means to go on vacation.
