Phineas Mollod and Jason Tesauro, authors of The Modern Gentleman: A Guide to Essential Manners, Savvy and Vice and The Modern Lover: A Playbook for Suitors, Spouses, and Ringless Carousers, have created five first date rules designed to impress. Rule No. 1: Dress with finesse. Instead of just grabbing something out of the closet, think about it first. Choose something that is simple, but sophisticated.

Having presented the definitive portrait of the enlightened male in THE MODERN GENTLEMAN, Phineas Mollod and Jason Tesauro explore affairs of the heart (and temptations of the loins) in this rollicking sequel. The authors begin by charting the life of the evolved bachelor, offering sage advice on such topics as “One-Night Stands,” “Demystifying the Flogger,” and “Webslinging” (dating online). Mollod and Tesauro next contemplate the transitional man's path from the “Me Cycle” to the “We Cycle.” Whether you are trying to convince close friends of the charms of your new love or testing the long arm of puritanical parents by “Living in Sin,” Mollod and Tesauro have a stiff drink and cool counsel at the ready. And for those modern bachelors who are getting hitched, the authors have copious advice on staging an unorthodox wedding with class, managing the financial merger, stoking the bedroom coals, and embarking on “Daddy Detox.” Packed with sharp wit and insightful commentary, THE MODERN LOVER is the definitive guide for guys negotiating the road from bachelor pad to bedroom fads to brand-new dad. This sequel to THE MODERN GENTLEMAN (40,000 copies sold) offers essential advice and instills savoir faire for avowed bachelors (rounding out the sexual resume; test-driving toys and tolerances), serial monogamists (balancing provocative friendships with at-home loyalties; avoiding the dreaded state of “P-Whipped”), and husbands-to-be (managing in-laws and outlaws; minding “Lights & Darks”).Mollod and Tesauro are monthly manners columnists for Men's Health magazine. Authors Mollod and Tesauro have championed manners “makeovers” on CNN and The Montel Williams Show.

As an androphile, reading a book written ostensibly by and for heterophile readers, I found much to like in this pleasant, entertaining, useful, and prudent book. Androphiles capable of substituting pronouns and "like-for-like" will share my pleasures. Most of us have been, done, and repeated many of the "hedonic" and pleasureless aims of the "pleasure principle," without any pleasure. Is it possible we missed something?

Well, the authors seem to have gone through the same process we all seem to undergo. And, in this charming little book, they espouse something as strange and foreign as emotionally-involved romanticism. Wow. Seems almost antediluvian. Romance? Emotions? Pleasures? Discretion? Discrimination? Tastes? Sensual sexuality? Not for the feint of heart, or the online "hook-up" generation -- except as a way out of the hedonic treadmill.

The humor, lightness, and yet serious themes are excellently conjoined to make this little book of Don Juan's stories seem only too common, yet with opportunities the "commercial" interests may have omitted. Imagine? A modern, romantic lover who wants more than anonymous serial dalliances (and that too)? To think we have those choices? If for no other reason, to see the expanded choices available makes this light-hearted fare a charming, pleasant, and enjoyable read.

Mollod and Tesauro have done it again; a sharp, witty look at what gents 'should' and 'should not' be doing in searching, meeting, wooing, and keeping. About 1/2 of the sentences in this cook are similes, another 1/4 are metaphors. Here and there exist a few *truly* clever, witty gems. (If the "witty banter" in shows like "The Gilmore Girls" drives you nuts, this is NOT a book you'll enjoy.) A number of topics are explored, some of them more mundane than others. Overall, most of Mollod and Tesauro's advice is sage; guidance for making informed choices, and answers to minor-detail questions abound.

Recipes for adult beverages are peppered throughout the pages, often named or themed alongside the topic at hand-- however they contain no measurements, so proportions for making these drinks may require a certain amount of speculation or experimentation.

A fun read for both men and women.

This book is definitely for the "evolved bachelor" in the parlance of an editorial review posted on Amazon. An urban sophisticate could use this book to add that extra veneer of sparkle to his already glossed self and get a good chuckle out of the witty prose, as well. However, the vast majority of hot-dog chomping guys would (I presume) still emerge clueless after perusing this book.

The authors give absolutely no guidance on how to approach a woman in real life. The internet dating advice on this issue, however, is a little more fleshed out with specifics. The would-be-carouser is also not advised how to behave on those all important, impression forming initial dates. I'm a female and I'm utterly amazed (and often appalled) just by the way many otherwise well-meaning, honorable, smart professional men relate to women. Advice such as not treating a date as a therapist, taking some genuine interest in her life, maintaining proper grooming and hygiene in an intimate relationship are definite romance-builders. These topics of paramount importance do not come up in the book except as cursory references to other issues. In addition, The .. ahem ... end "bars" theme comes across as overworked especially as the authors have used a similar motif in their previous tome.

All in all, I wish that Mollod and Tesauro had gone one step back on the evolutionary scale and given the nitty-gritty (with specific examples) on how to have a pleasant social interaction with a woman. Even "Modern Gentleman" does not cover these crucial fundamentals but assumes a more sophisticated patina in its readers, that is sadly lacking in the real world. Once these skills are thoroughly mastered the stage is set for romance and the gentleman reader is primed for the kind of advice given in this book.

but there are better. There wasn't anything new in it for me. I liked it but wouldn't recommend anybody buy it

The best aspect of this book is the design of the cover, which you can see at the top left of this page. Have you looked at it? There; done. You don't have to buy the book.
Besides the cover, there is nothing I can recommend about the book except for a few negative things: I didn't find any terrible grammatic mistakes; the usage mistakes are common ones; and the book is not entirely offensive, except perhaps to your literary sensibilities.
"The Modern Lover," as other reviewers have pointed out, offers no advice, so don't look to this for that. Neither does it offer any insight into how men behave or think. It is not clear who might find the book appealing at all.
The prose style is juvenile in the extreme. Junior high school teachers might be impressed, but I don't think anyone else would be. Before I abandoned the book, I did not encounter anything amusing, though there were parts clearly _intended_ to be amusing, fail to amuse though they do. One case I noted (an ugly stereotyping of "redheads") we can only hope was intended as a joke. There are no signs that it was so intended, but it is so very crude that it can only have got past an editor as "humor."
