Serious students of earth science have long known that much of what we see in the world of geochemistry, mineralogy, geophysics and more has deep roots in thermodynamics. The challenge is to take the clean, math-based, theoretical side of thermo and apply it to the truly messy systems found in raw nature. Prof Ganguly's book is a strong effort to that end; although not for the weak-kneed or faint of heart. Indeed, the reader will have to read slowly, process prodigious math in his/her head, and ponder hard. Along the way, the author offers a strong overview of classical theory, and then presents many applications to earth sciences. There are mineralogical examples, coupled with a long list of applications to deep-earth research (Press/Temp), touching on mixing, solutions, phases and factionations. In the end, and armed with an understanding of material presented here, that rock sample from a recent field trip will take on a whole new meaning, when viewed in light of the thermo involved. There's a long, complex, near-miraculous process of thermo behind, say, material melting in a deep-earth environment, then mobilizing and rising through different pressure regimes, while altering chemical bonds and bonding angles in a dynamic regime of changing heat flow and electrochemistry; moving to the point of cooling, crystal growth and crack propagation. At the end of the day, thermo explains quite a bit. Earth science revolves around how energy affects materials. Thermo is a profound and important tool for the earth scientist.

This is one of the better books in thermodynamics in general and maybe the best book for Earth Scientists. Although the book is aimed at earth-scientists, it explains thermodynamic concepts for any one who wants a clear understanding of the principles. Thus the book is important for all graduate students and faculty in geoscience, geophysics, physics and chemistry and must be in all libraries.

The book has thirteen chapters. It begins with an introduction of nature and scope laying the framework with which Ganguly relates physical work and energy contained in matter. Chapters 2 and 3, he elucidades the thermodynamic laws with special emphasis to mineralogical applications. The two chapters and the chapter 4 contain one of the best discussions of entropy and heat capacity found in any book. Chapter 4 deals with a not-so-well-understood topic of thermochemistry and state of solids. Chapter 5 deals with critical phenomenon and equations of state. Chapter 6 deals with phase transitions and is an excellent review wih several of the author's valuable insights.
Chapter 7 is a very useful text for solid state physicists and geophysicists who deal with the planetary interiors. Chapters 8 and 9 describe solution models and are useful to all readers. This is a topic in which Ganguly has done some original research and his experience is reflected in the descrption.The above comment also applies to chapter 11 which contains matter that is on the forefront of all research on the petrologic evolution of earth. Chapter 10 deals with the topic of equilibrium in chemical systems as complex a molten rock or magma. Chapter 12 is on electrochemistry and the book ends with chapter 13 handling the very complicated topic of surface science. A chapter of this kind is not found in standard books on thermodynamics. The three appendices further aid in the value of this book. Appendix C provides description of methods to estimate tehrmodynamicd data.

For geoscientsts and geophysicists, I cannot think of a better book available in the market. The book not only contains lucid descriptions of the complex principles but also conatins rare insights into nature of materials as only Gabguly could provide with his years of research in this field. It is a very complete book and belongs in every library and the book collections of students and professionals.

The great physicist Sommerfeld wrote long ago ""Thermodynamics is a strange subject. The first time you read it, you don't understand it at all. The second time you read, you think that you have understood essentially all of it, except may a few things here and there. The next time you read, you find out again that you haven't understood the subject, but by then you have become so used to this that you don't feel frustrated any more". This book on thermodynamics by Jibamitra Ganguly is a step ahead of anything comparable in the field. As I see it the book is extremely useful to geochemists and is absolutely necessary to geophysicists and all Earth and Planetary scientists who deal with thermodynamics in terrestrial and planetary problems. It cannot be suggested as a textbook for undergraduates but for advanced courses it could become "The book". I found lot of benefit in reading it.... though some sense of frustration (in Sommerfeld's sense) persists.
