In the spring and fall, vast numbers of migrating birds pass through the Great Plains region on their way to summer nesting grounds and winter residences. First of all, I have to preface this review by saying that my husband and I are pretty avid birders - it's more than just a passing hobby. We watch birds all the time, and schedule vacations when possible to great birding areas and habitats. So we were excited to make this trip to the Black Hills and bought this book specifically to help guide us as we looked for new birds, and great places to find them.
Unfortunately, the book isn't great for experienced birders. It isn't comprehensive, i.e., it doesn't show every bird that could occur, and it doesn't give good locations to look for them, rather, it tells some general habitat. Most regional birding guides we've used in the past are pretty specific about where to go and what you can expect, and they are arranged by location. This one is arranged by bird, and thus, a lot of redundant information is given, and you are forced to look up each bird separately, rather than looking up a particular area or habitat and reading about every bird you could see there. Too bad - because it has lots of nice photos - although one is completely WRONG! Pg. 180-181 shows a Summer Tanager and labels it a Scarlet Tanager - OOPS!
Maybe an okay book for very beginner birders. But if you know what a life list is, forget it.

A good book to have while bird watching.
