Into the Deep" charts our exploration of Earth's final frontier and its inhabitants as it descends from bright coral reefs to the eternal, cold darkness of the abyss. It is a voyage that will astonish the reader - just as the latest deep sea discoveries regularly confound scientists - as they meet the Giant Squid's bigger brother, the Colossal Squid, and encounter the utterly alien environment that surrounds 'black smokers' - hydrothermal rifts in the Earth's crust.

Into the Deep : Exploring the Earth's Oceans. by Peter Batson and Karsten Schneider. It is difficult to pick out the strangest creature, but the leafy seadragon (Phycodorus eques)on page 45 must be one of them.

Earth's five oceans are one of the wonders of the solar system: they cover the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, our planet's most extensive mountain range; host the Great Barrier Reef - the largest structure built by living organisms; and provide the habitat for Earth's most extreme lifeforms - the denizens of the deep, nightmarish apparitions bristling with fangs and fluorescence. Yet despite its proximity and riches, in many ways we know more about the surface of Mars than we know about the deep ocean. "Into the Deep" charts our exploration of Earth's final frontier and its inhabitants as it descends from bright coral reefs to the eternal, cold darkness of the abyss.

The seller sent me two books from America to Australia in a sack with no wrapping. Not impressed. Please do not so this to your buyers! The book despite being knocked about is beautifully illustrated and worded- HOWEVER I suspect I purchased some cheap Chinese reproduction as the photos looked second-rate compared to the original book that I already have signed by the authors themselves.

About 200 large pages of striking closeups of stranger-than-fiction animals living in the ocean and other water environments. Some of them must be seen to be believed. I would give it 5 stars if the text were more thorough, but it occupies only a small space on each page. It is difficult to pick out the strangest creature, but the leafy seadragon (Phycodorus eques)on page 45 must be one of them.
