This is a great solutions manual. It doesn't have all the solutions, just odd numbers as is common. But the big thing about it is it actually shows the steps to take to get the solution. Really nice for when you are struggling with concepts. Sometimes what they are doing isn't 100% clear, but once you learn their syntax and mental shortcuts, this should all be clear.

Unless you are a math major and delight in a book that challenges you to create proofs of formulas that it has not yet even introduced, do your best to use some other text. This book does a fine job of teaching the material that it presents in its concise and clear chapters. Then come the problem sets, where you are confronted with material that in some cases is presented in subsequent portions of the book (ha ha), and in some cases is not presented at all. Another annoying feature of the problem sets is that the odd problems, for which answers are provided, are often more straightforward, whereas the even problems are harder and require more elaborate calculations. The book could do a better job of matching odd and even problems by type and "degree of difficulty".

I would say for extremely gifted math students who plan to become math majors, mastering calculus using this book may be akin to climbing high mountain peaks without oxygen, but for the rest of us, it is merely a hard slog. The redeeming feature is that this book may better prepare you for other courses in which the profs show "no mercy" and take the sink or swim approach. Just don't expect to be coddled if you use this book.

Got to love it when you can buy the book outright for have to price of renting it from the campus store. Pro tip: if you can try to buy your books in December, the prices are way lower than they are at the start of the semester.

The book is very good for someone who is very good at math and wants to be a mathematician. It isn't enough that the authors introduce a theorem, they usually feel it necessary to prove it. They really explore calculus from every angle, too, especially limits. This is no Dummies book, to be sure. I bought it to teach me more calculus (just for fun) after reading Calculus for Dummies, and I cherry picked parts of it and think I have a decent understanding of the material now, if not all the fine points. Fortunately, I have Maple and a friend who has a master's in math to guide me. The book isn't the best for self-learners like me because it only has the answers to odd-numbered problems. I wish all math textbooks gave the answers to all problems, but that is another argument. I'm not sharp at math, but I like to challenge myself sometimes. I think anyone can do math if it's explained well, but this book has no such pity. It's written by mathematicians for aspiring mathematicians. That isn't necessarily bad, but important to bear in mind.

I think this book is well written to teach Calculus without too much confusion. Sometimes the authors don't show enough steps in their example problems so it takes a while to learn what exactly they did at each point, but it's manageable.

I have a previous Calculus book from a previous course and I quickly learned that this book is not adequate for beginners. It does not explain things in a low level language therefore people who aren't familiar with mathematical terminology can't understand. My other Calculus book has since replaced this one, now this book sits on a shelf collecting dust.

Let me explain further.
I am a transfer student at the University of Utah. I transferred from a school back east. At my previous institution we used a book called Essential Calculus Early Transcendentals Second Edition, by James Stewart. After using both books for some time now, I can further explain the difference from a students perspective. Calculus is a difficult subject to learn, there is no doubt about it. After studying it for about 1.5 years now I can honestly say that I love the subject. I find it fascinating and intriguing. Understanding calculus is something that takes quite a bit of time, but it's worth it.
My professor at the university of utah was quite intelligent but he can be extremely difficult to follow, you know the saying "too smart for your own good?" That describes him in a nutshell. Therefore I needed to rely on my textbook to teach me. I found this book confusing and difficult to follow. Many of the topics did a poor job of illustrating the "bigger picture" for why we take the steps we do. I found myself relying heavily on my previous textbook for better and more clear instruction.
If you are a professor reading this, understand that whether you like the book or not shouldn't matter. If your students can't understand the methods it uses to teach, that should deter you from selecting this book. Don't be selfish and pick the book because it "suits you". Think of your students. Personally, as a student I speak from experience when I say that there are better books out there.
Students: if your professor requires you to use this book, obviously there is not much you can do. My advice? go slow while reading the book, ask questions, go to class, put in the time, and Kahn Academy should become your new best friend.
