Sacred Ecology: Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Resource Managements Fikret Berkes 1999 Philadelphia, PA: Taylor & Francis. I picked up Fikret Berkes Sacred Ecology first because of its title. I was in the midst of writing a proposal for a course in sacred ecology and the book’s title seemed intriguing. It was not the only coincidence. I discovered the author, who is Professor of Natural Resources at the University of Manitoba, had done his field work in Northern Quebec, with the James Bay Cree. A few years ago, I had travelled to the area and stayed with the Cree in the place Berkes.

Sacred Ecology examines bodies of knowledge held by indigenous and other rural peoples around the world, and asks how we can learn from this knowledge and ways of knowing. Berkes explores the importance of local and indigenous knowledge as a complement to scientific ecology, and its cultural and political significance for indigenous groups themselves. Winner of the Ecological Society of America's 2014 Sustainability Science Award.

Second, we consider how rural people can acquire both ecological and market knowledge that enables sustainable management of their own natural resources and engage equitably in markets and payment for environmental service schemes. Specifically, we critically examine the role of ecological education in helping rural communities engage more knowledgably in natural resource management practices and markets and payment schemes for environmental services.

I`m a PHd teacher on Anthropology and I did a pos-doctorate in Human Ecology. For my field researches and my classes this book is very precious. Traditional knowlegde is very important to know for whom works with natural resources and social conditions. As I`m working with artisanal fisheries population, studying families, specially the role of women, this book is one of the best I ever met, helping to understand the links among traditional spiritual beliefs and the conservation of life in natural spots. I recomend it.

This book pushes the field of Ecology to a new level. Whilst the concepts of Traditional Ecological Knowledge are not new (in fact they are ancient), the range and maturity of the discussion makes it very accessible to the average reader. Berkes ranges widely with his examples and clearly the book involved significant internationl networking (Yes, there were even examples from my home of New Zealand!). Some fascinating myths that are exploded include the Chief Seattle Speech and the Eskimo snow hoax. I recommend it to every ecologist as a way to bring the sacred into science.
