by. Ellis, Richard, 1938-.

The Book of Whales celebrates the beauty, the grandeur, the fascination, of this planet's thirty-three species of whale - from the legendary humpback, sperm, and blue varieties to the equally alluring but lesser-known ginkgo-toothed, goosebeak, and scamperdown. With 102 black-and-white illustrations and 24 pages in color.

In this copiously illustrated book, Richard Ellis delineates the complex history of men and whales. He tells the story of the world's first commercial whalers, the Basques of tenth-century France and Spain; the birth of whaling as an industry during the settlement of New Zealand and Australia; the worldwide movement to protect the whale; and even the origins of the unicorn myth (a whale was responsible). This is the first comprehensive history of the whale's turbulent and always controversial relationship with humankind.

Ellis, a prolific writer on marine life, provides an overview of the larger members of the order Cetacea, including the baleen whales, the sperm whales, beaked whales, and the monodontids (the beluga and narwhal). Each species account includes information on taxonomic history, various aspects of their natural history, their history of exploitation, etc. Although most accounts are very informative, some (e.g. the beaked whales) appear to be filled with whatever little information was available on them at the time (which isn't much for most species of ziphiid). Ellis also has a very dry writing style and loves to quote, which can be a bit discouraging at times. While he includes thirteen beautiful color plates (which illustrate all the great whales, the beluga and narwhal, and a few beaked whales), his black-and-white paintings for each species often appeared rushed or even inaccurate (to be fair, little was known at the time of the appearance of certain species of beaked whale, so he did have to improvise a bit). The book is well-referenced though, as Ellis provides references throughout the text (usually giving the name and date of the work in parenthesis after each sentence or two) as well as a very helpful species-specific reference section, a bibliography, and an index in the back. Although very outdated now (a new species of baleen whale and several species of beaked whale were described well after this book was published, as well as a host of papers on a number of aspects of many of these species' biology and behavior), it is still a interesting read for those fascinated by the larger members of the Cetacea.

Excellent book to introduce readers to whales, sufficiently covers the varied types of whales without being overbearing. Your interest will determine how deep you research further...

Although much of the information in this book is now out of date, it is still worth reading. I would love to see a second edition reflecting more recent research.

Ellis' book on sharks is probably better known than this book on whales, but both are great. The cornerstone of the book are his numerous paintings of a variety of whales.
Ellis also puts forth a good effort in describing what is know about this group of marine mammals. He addresses aspects of the biology, ecology, and behavior of whales.
Though lacking references to the professional scientific literature, Ellis does a good job in introducing this group to the non-technical crowd. If you or a child of yours is interested in whales, this is a great book to have around.
A highly recommended introduction to the whales.

I first recieved this book for X-mas in the early 80's. I was 10 and in love with whales (I still am). Great book with many details of all the species. The paintings/illustrations are very good, although may be out of date in portraying the true profile of whales.
I've the 1st edition hardback (1982) and since that time the knowledge has greatly grown about whales. However; Ellis goes into great detail with the historic (whaling era)/ scietific literature of the day.
For what it's worth - this is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in whales. There is also the Book of Dolphins and Porpoises which is equally as fine as the Book of Whales.

As far as the content of the book goes, it unfortunately is not appropriate for small children and there are limited pictures of whales. As a matter of fact there are no photographs of whales at all, only drawings. I was not aware of this at the time of purchase. I am sure the content will be more interesting when said child grows old enough to enjoy the numerous pages of information about various whales, I only hope he is still interested in them. The drawings are beautiful and descriptive though.
