Wildflowers abound in Shenandoah National Park, providing a beautiful and varied display throughout the growing season. The display begins in early Spring (late March) as the hepatica (Anemone amencana), and bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) push their way through the forest leaf litter.

This book was first published in 1979 and this is the fourth printing dated to 1993, so consequently some of the taxonomy in it is outdated by now. However, unless you are a stickler for up-to-date scientific names, that really shouldn't matter and does not take away from its usefulness as a field guide. It should be of interest to wildflower enthusiasts both of the botanist type as well as nature photographers. The book covers the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, but seems very applicable for the entire Blue Ridge range all the way down through North Carolina to the Smoky Mountains. It concentrates on common plants in the area, listing 176 with photographs and mentioning an additional 85 in the descriptions.

The book is obviously designed with the lay person in mind. The plants are sorted by flower color with colored tabs to quickly thumb to the correct section. The photographs are large (about 4x5 in.) and almost all of them show foliage in addition to the flowers, which really helps with identification. A neat feature in this field guide is that it lists the magnification under each image. E.g. it may say x1/2 meaning the picture is half the actual size of the plant, or x2 meaning the image is magnified to twice the life size of a tiny flower. This is really helpful - I wished more field guides would do this! Information provided underneath each image includes the months that the plant is in bloom, a short description of the plant in non-technical language (no knowledge or glossary of botanical terms needed), and what kind of habitat it is commonly found in. The book ends with a pronunciation key for scientific names and an index of common and scientific names.

From a nature photography standpoint, the book is of interest as due to the age of this publication all the photographs must be old school film images. They all seem to be taken under natural light conditions and make a wonderful source of inspiration for wildflower photography, whether you still have an old film camera or a digital camera. Overall, despite its age this is still a wonderful book that I know I will treasure and keep with my favorite field guides.

My original volume of this book was severely water damaged in a flood a few years back, so when I saw this identical volume I had to have it. We like visiting the Shenandoah National Park and when I see a specimen I'm unfamiliar with, this is the book I use to identify it. This was a great value and the vendor shipped it promptly. The condition was like new and I couldn't be happier.

I had this book once and misplaced it. Now I have it again and use it frequently as I live in the Blue Ridge.

The color index is great for identifying wild flowers in your own forest areas. I love this book!

Upon our return from Shenandoah National Park, we found that there were two wildflowers we couldn't identify. Our photographs did not include foliage, and our usual resources have only the more common flowers. We even tried in vain to look for it on the Internet. This book proved invaluable in our research. We were successful in identifying the flowers (Four- Leaved Milkweed, Wood Vetch)! There are 200 photograph of Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountain wildflowers. Despite its fourth printing (1993), the photographs are vivid and generous in size (3.75X5 inches). The majority include foliage which is extremely helpful. Each photo has a text including Latin name, family, bloom time, and brief description. Most importantly, the wildflowers are divided by color. There is an index in the back of common and scientific names. I have the gently used hardcover edition and it looks to be in excellent condition. It was delivered quickly which was good, because we were really eager to identify the two "unknown" wildflowers we found. I would recommend this book as a source for identifying the common and not so common wildflowers of the region.

The flowers are arranged by color, which is very helpful when trying to identify those we see. Very nice book! It will go on many hikes with us.
