Selected Papers of Abraham Robinson Volume 2 Nonstandard Analysis and Philosophy. Seligman Abraham Robinson was bom in Waldenburg in Lower Silesia (then Germany) on October 6, 1918. He was the second of two children bom to Abraham Robinsohn and Hedwig Lotte Robinsohn, bom Bähr. His brother Saul was two years older. The apparent break with Jewish practice made in naming him after his father was justified on the grounds of the father’s untimely death at the age of forty, shortly before young Abraham’s birth.

Abraham Robinson (born Robinsohn; October 6, 1918 – April 11, 1974) was a mathematician who is most widely known for development of non-standard analysis, a mathematically rigorous system whereby infinitesimal and infinite numbers were reincorporated into modern mathematics. Nearly half of Robinson's papers were in applied mathematics rather than in pure mathematics.

Halmos claimed that Robinson’s framework is unnecessary but Henson and Keisler argue that Robinson’s framework allows one to dig deeper into set-theoretic resources than is common in Archimedean mathematics.

Robinson's book Non-standard Analysis was published in 1966. Robinson, Abraham (1979), Keisler, H. Jerome (e., Selected papers of Abraham Robinson. Robinson was strongly interested in the history and philosophy of mathematics, and often remarked that he wanted to get inside the head of Leibniz, the first mathematician to attempt to articulate clearly the concept of infinitesimal numbers. While at UCLA his colleagues remember him as working hard to accommodate PhD students of all levels of ability by finding them projects of the appropriate difficulty.

Considered by many to be Abraham Robinson's magnum opus, this book offers an explanation of the development and application of non-standard analysis which grew out of Robinson's attempt to resolve the contradictions posed by infinitesimals within calculus.
