Charles Messier's catalogue of nebulae and star clusters, published in 1784, marked the start of a new era of deep sky astronomy.

Charles Messier's catalogue of nebulae and star clusters, published in 1784, marked the start of a new era of deep sky astronomy. This tradition of observing galaxies and clusters is kept alive by serious amateur astronomers who study the objects of the deep sky. Nearly all the objects are visible in a small telescope. Many, such as the Crab Nebula and the Andromeda galaxy, are among the most fascinating objects in the universe. Kenneth Glyn Jones has revised his definitive version of Messier's catalogue

Charles Messier's catalog of nebulae and star clusters. Kenneth Glyn Jones has revised his definitive version of Messier's catalog

Charles Messier's catalog of nebulae and star clusters. Kenneth Glyn Jones has revised his definitive version of Messier's catalog. His own observations and drawings, together with maps and diagrams, make this a valuable introduction to deep-sky observing. Historical and astrophysical notes bring the science of these nebulae right up to date. This is a unique handbook, unlikely ever to be equaled in its completeness and importance to the telescope owner.

Practical Astronomy Handbooks. The catalog that Messier compiled of nuisance objects turned out to be one of the most important and long lasting catalogs in astronomy. The objects turned out to be various types of nebulea and galaxies. This book takes each one of Messier's Object, identifies it and locates it so that any amatuer with a modest telescope can observe them. jamessavik, July 27, 2006.

Okay, first off I have been observing since 1974 when I started out with a 2 1/2" reflector, currently use a 16" reflector. Hope this review helps you decide whether or not to purchase. The book is nice size, 7 1/2" X 10", hardbound, 426 pages. The binding is quite nice...I do not forsee pages falling out after use. The book opens flat. Pages are semi-glossy. All pictures are in black and white. Each M object is written up in the following format: M number, then NGC number, type of object and constellation, Coordinates for 1950 (not really a big deal, these objects are bright enough that 1950 locations will get you close enough to sweep them up, besides, who uses coordianates for M objects?), then size and distance. Following this header are decriptions from the classical observers such as Messier, William Herschel, John Herschel, Webb, Smyth, Lassell, etc. Next is notes from the author which often gives little known tidbits about the object, then a how to observe note or two, and often a nearby objects paragraph. The author provided a chart to help locate it, and his own drawing of the object.
At the end of the book are pictures of every M object. This is nice and also may help observers with bad skies find the objects. There is a nice biography of Messier and other observers mentioned in the book, maps of the sky with the M objects plotted, a nice map of the crowded Virgo region necessary whenever you enter this with a telescope.
So...do I recommend this? Yes, but with reservations. With his charts he often refers you to another page (example, for M16 he refers you to map 8) but that isn't too big of a deal, also the drawings are usually useless but I guess could be somwhat helpful in certain occasions...I draw the objects I see too, but the reason for that is it helps me SEE the object...I stare longer to get all the detail or stars etc. etched in my mind. Thus I wind up seeing more because I look longer. Perhaps it may be instructive to draw the object then compare it to the authors drawing. Another use could be if you observe from light polluted skies and have trouble with the galaxies. His drawings have enough field stars that it would help you pinpoint where the galaxy is.
I rate books this way...if my house caught fire and everything burned, which ones would I immediately replace, which ones would eventually be replaced and which ones would I not replace. Burnhams Celestial handbook and my Uranometria star atlas would be immediate replacements. This book would be an eventual replacement. The facts it gives (also given in Burnhams) in one book and convenient to use makes it more likely to be used when friends are over to view. They want distances etc of these objects and it is convenient to be able to quickly answer the questions as well as throw in a few tidbits of other info.
If you are starting out and working your way thru the M catalog by all means this will DEFINITELY help you. If you are an armchair astronomer then there may not be enough hard data for you. If you have seen them all several dozen times then you are beyond this book but it still has uses for cloudy nights and clear nights under the stars with a few friends.

this is a clear and classic account of the (slightly over) one hundred messier objects. these constitute a catalog of the main types of star formations, i.e. clusters and nebulae. an outstanding way to learn "the bones" of modern astronomy.

Great book. A classic.
