Lucilla Matthew Andrews Crichton was a British romantic novelist as Lucilla Andrews. She joined the British Red Cross in 1940 and later trained as a nurse at St Thomas' Hospital, London, during World War II. She was a founder member of the Romantic Novelists' Association, which honoured her shortly before her death with a lifetime achievement award. The story deals with the emotional problems of a young nurse who is nearing the end of her training and has become unofficially engaged to a house-surgeon, when her career is jeopardized by a piece of carelessness which completely changes her future.

Moved from her ward to do other duties, Gillian experiences the happiness and heartache that comes from nursing both children and accident victims. As she struggles to understand who took the drug, and why, Gillian finds support and truth from some unexpected quarters.
