I took a chance on Cindy C. Bennett's Geek Girl mostly for two reasons. It didn't have any vampires. And it seemed like a book that teaches acceptance among teen peers, and I think that's an important subject these days after all of the school bullying we've seen in the headlines

I took a chance on Cindy C. And it seemed like a book that teaches acceptance among teen peers, and I think that's an important subject these days after all of the school bullying we've seen in the headlines. Our narrator is Jen Jones, a seventeen year old "goth" girl who is a foster child living with the Clarks. She's been in and out of several foster homes thanks to her behavior. Like most kids in the system, she doesn't have pleasant memories of her real parents or childhood

17-year-old Jen turns her life upside down when, out of boredom, she makes a bet that she can turn school geek Trevor into someone like her.

Think I can turn that boy bad?" 17-year-old Jen turns her life upside down when, out of boredom, she makes a bet that she can turn school geek Trevor into someone like her. Instead, the goth girl finds herself sucked into his world of sci-fi movies, char.

"Think I could turn that boy bad?" My two best friends--my only two friends, really--follow my gaze and laugh. "Trevor Hoffman?" Beth scoffs. "No way, Jen." "I bet I could," I say, shrugging. "Why him?" Beth asks. "Why not any of the other nerds sitting there with him?" "Because," I say slowly, "he isn't your typical run-of-the-mill geek. Trevor Hoffman is different. He would be a little more difficult to take down--more of a challenge, you know?" Jen's teenage life of rebelling and sneaking out is growing stale. In an effort to combat her boredom, Jen makes a bet to turn Trevor, a nice geek, into a "bad boy." Unexpectedly, she is pulled into Trevor's world of sci-fi movies, charity work, and even--ugh!--bowling. Jen discovers that hanging out with Trevor isn't so bad after all. But when Trevor finds out about the wager, all bets are off.

Geek Girl is about a goth girl named Jennifer (she prefers Jen) and how she makes a deal with her two best friends Ella and Beth that she can turn geeky Trevor bad. Her friends say that if she can actually pull it off they will pay to have her lip repierced.

Jen starts going out of her way to say hi to Trevor at school and even goes to a school stomp so she can dance and flirt with him. To her delight Trevor starts falling for her but to her dismay, Jen starts falling for Trevor too. She also realizes that Trevor is a good influence on her but even though she is falling for Trevor, Jen thinks that the only way she can have him is if she can turn him bad like her then they'd be on equal ground.

Unfortunately for Jen her two old best friends Ella and Beth are realizing that Jen isn't the same goth party girl that they knew and that Jen really likes Trevor. They decide to get back at her by Beth telling Trevor about the deal. Sadly for Jen, Trevor breaks up with her after he learns the true reason why Jen started hanging around with him and Jen is devastated.

Luckily for Jen she finds a true best friend in the new girl Jane. Jane decides to help Jen win Trevor back with giving Jen a makeover and convincing everyone at Homecoming to vote for Jen for Homecoming Queen thus a kiss happens between Jen and Trevor who was the Homecoming King.

Trevor finally forgives Jen when he invites her to the Theater Group's show and he plays her song on the piano. When he's done playing the song, Trevor goes out into the audience to see Jen and she tells Trevor she loves him. They make up and kiss.

The book ends with Trevor and Jen on Trevor's trampoline and Jen is still very sorry about her actions but Trevor tells her there will be no more apologies since they're both sorry and that it doesn't matter anymore since they're back together now. Trevor tells Jen that even if their relationship before had been a lie he wouldn't have traded any of his time with her which I thought was very sweet.

They were some dark themes in this book but I think the author handled them pretty well. She kept the dark themes relatively light and balanced.

I loved Jen and Trevor as a couple. Jen was such a tough and sassy character but I liked her. She had to be strong in order to survive what she went through as a child. I really loved seeing her change from the Jen from the beginning of the book to the Jen at it's end. You can really learn something from Jen and her story. I absolutely loved Trevor. He was so cute and geeky. I wish I could have him. I would recommend this to anyone who likes geeky romances.

I give this book 5 stars.

I was hesitant to get this book because it didn't have any reviews or ratings and I usually like to read paranormal romance, and this one seemed like it might be straight romance.

It was a love story and it was wonderful, it had me giddy and excited. I found it interesting compared to my paranormal romance, because there wasn't any vampires, or werewolves or witches to worry about that the love developed over time as it would in real life and not at lightning speed as it would in other books. That was a nice change.

But this book wasn't just straight romance, it was about love and learning how to love, to be loved, how to get through heartbreak. I am 30 years old but this book brought me right back to younger years and I could totally relate.

I love that the author wrote this book for and with her daughters. I think it is a great read for young girls and totally appropriate, inspiring, realistic and relatable.

My Thoughts:

It all starts with the bet. Jennifer trying to turn Trevor bad. For a piercing.

I found myself relating to Jen since she was such a rebel. The difference is that she shows her rebellion in the way she presents herself to the world--the whole goth look. The extent of her bad nature (a partying and piercing wanting side), not so much like me. But personality wise--yes. Trevor was definitely a crush-worthy guy in my opinion. I'm often attracted to geeky guys (or guys with a lot of geeky type qualities, not just guys who "like Star Wars", because, let's face it, 95% of guys like Star Wars). His sweetness is the cherry on the ice cream sundae of his crush-worthiness.

Even though Jen's intentions were to turn HIM into someone more like her, he gradually causes changes in her instead. She fights it a little bit, taking him to a parties and dressing even darker, but caves in again. The gradual changes in Jen are definitely ones to root for. You struggle alongside her trying to make the decision. Wanting both worlds but knowing that sometimes you can't have it all... sometimes you don't want it all either.

Jen is a foster child, and she is in a constant state of uncertainty. It's extremely common for foster children to be bounced from house to house, and unfortunately they don't always get put in the best homes. Often they get placed in houses that are not homes, ones that only want state money to put a roof over your head. She expects every stay to end abruptly (sometimes even causes it to end herself) so she never settles in. Her past haunts her and she doesn't open up easily, especially about her real parents. But with her Foster parents, the Clarks, and with Trevor, everything's different.

Yet it's hard to let go, and even harder to admit what got them where they are without worrying about hurting him. She wants to tell him about the bet, but before she can get the courage to tell him, he finds out from someone else. His reaction is exactly what she feared the most. Can she show him how she really feels? Will he let her explain herself? Can he forgive her?

Want to know the answers? Read the book and find out for yourself! I'm not telling. ;)

Cindy C. Bennett has done it again. I did love Heart On A Chain a lot, but this one I found myself connecting with Jen more than Kate (from HOAC). And geeks are hot. Not that that should play a huge factor in reading the book. It's just worth mentioning. I loved the geek talk, the emotions, the development of Jen and Trevor's relationship, it was all great. You must get your hands on a copy ASAP. I can't wait to see what else is in store from Cindy.

My Rating:

Exceptional: Stay up until at least 1 AM
