Home David Wilkerson The Cross and the Switchblade. In the end I didn’t cross the street-not that night.

Home David Wilkerson The Cross and the Switchblade. The Cross and the Switchblade, . I just walked, past bars and overflowing garbage cans, past storefront churches and police stations and on into an immense housing project with broken windows and broken lights and a broken Keep Off the Grass sign on the ground. On the way back to my car I heard what sounded to me like three quick shots.

This is the experience that David Wilkerson talks about in his book, The Cross and The Switchblade. He talks about his initial calling to the streets of New York City in the early 60's, and the ministry he started that targeted troubled youth, often heavily involved in gangs and drugs. There is a heavy reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit, which they discover has amazing power to overcome often deadly addictions such as heroin.

David Wilkerson started living out his faith boldly by traveling to New York City to walk around the streets and preach and evangelize to the gangs. After being in New York and making relationships, David Wilkerson sensed God telling him to move there full-time. After reading an abridged version of The Cross and the Switchblade, I was eager to hear how this movement had continued. I got my answers and also the answers to some of the threads left hanging in the first book. It's basically chronicling that unfolded with the Teen Challenge movement and how Wilkerson's life went on.

The Cross and the Switchblade is a biographical book written by pastor David Wilkerson with John and Elizabeth Sherrill, published by Random House in 1963. In 1958, pentecostal pastor David Wilkerson of Assemblies of God is touched by an article in Life Magazine about seven teenagers who are members of a criminal gang. Alone and with little money, he will go to Brooklyn, sometimes at the risk of his life, to talk about Jesus with members of street gangs

David Wilkerson was just a young preacher in the Pennsylvania hills when he was stunned by a new calling from God: go to New York City to speak to seven young gang members . Books related to The Cross and the Switchblade.

But something much greater was to come. Once in New York, David was inspired to stay for a lifetime of helping troubled teenagers get free of drugs and crime. With the word of God in his ears, he founded an inner-city ministry still known as the Teen Challenge to change their paths and alter thousands of lives forever.

Book by David R. Wilkerson. This is a truly inspiring book. This time, though, I purchased this as a gift for my nephew. I hope it will help him get through some challenges he is facing. com User, April 10, 2007. ISBN13: 9780891291510. Release Date: May 1976. Life changing. My mom went to teen challenge 6 years ago. I started reading this book after a prompt from the Holy Spirit. ❤️ I didn’t realize at the time David was the one who founded teen challenge. When it got to that part I wept. Realizing because this man listened to the lord my mother’s life was spared. No coincidence that I “randomly” clicked on this and audiobooks and bought it

What an amazing book. I am familiar with Teen Challenge but not its history nor David Wilkerson. This book is a fascinating read. I really felt David Wilkerson did a great job of conveying the feel of 1950's inner city New York. The grime, the gangs, the drugs, all come together under the watchful Holy Spirit of God to bring hope to these amazing people who started this great organization. This book should be read by anyone, not just those who are of Faith. I couldn't put it down!

Purchased this for someone who is incarcerated thinking maybe it would hit home. I heard Nikki Cruz speak at The Brooklyn Tabernacle and like I said prayed that the person I bought it for might find "something" in it.

I will never know as we are responsible for the input not the outcome, only time will tell. Not for everyone but definitely for the person I bought it for. The story of David Wilkerson was made into a movie way back in the 1960's I think played by Pat Boone. Wow how times have changed, one of the best selling books of 1959 was Twixt 12 and 20 by Pat Boone (who was Pat Boone lol), imagine that selling today? David Wilkerson walked where most men would not dare to walk into the streets of hell but saved a lot of souls. Truly a man of God if this type of book is for you.

This book is one of my favorites. When I was fifteen (many moons ago) our youth pastor gave this book to us to read. I couldn't put it down. I let my friends borrow it. When I was older I gave it to my fiancé when he went in to basic training to read and he passed it around and then the book got lost but I hope it ended up in someone hands that needed it. Then I read it again and the book is still good as ever.

The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson was a inspiring true story from the 60's that kept me engaged and wanting to read more. David Wilkerson, a Christian and small town preacher from Pennsylvania, felt a strong urge from God to go and help the boys and gangs in New York City. David Wilkerson started living out his faith boldly by traveling to New York City to walk around the streets and preach and evangelize to the gangs. After being in New York and making relationships, David Wilkerson sensed God telling him to move there full-time. Eventually, Wilkerson moved his whole family there and through a series of miracles ended up buying a huge house, later know as Teen Challenge, for the street teens to live in and go through drug rehab. Wilkerson helped a lot of people become Christians and get rid of drug and sex addictions.

I (and I am a teenager) would recommend this book to any Christian or person who is young in his/her faith and wondering how God works through people. This was a really good book and a fairly easy read. I give this book 5 stars.

This book helped change my life. It has touched my life more than anyone can imagine. David spoke about a personal relationship and love with God and the Holy Spirit that left me wanting to feel that same love. I searched for it and found it and my life and beliefs are so different.

I only wish this book would be read by every young person, rather than some fictional book like Harry Potter. It would possibly help keep so many young people from getting involved with drugs, prostitution and witchcraft. As a parent of two children, they saw the love and joy this brought to me and they have both read it and also wanted to seek out what it has to offer. What a blessing The Cross and the Switchblade had brought to our lives.

This book is an amazing account of the powerful things God has done and continues to do through the awesome ministry:?Teen Challenge. Whether you've heard of this ministry or not I highly recommend, if you are a believer in Jesus, read this book. And if you are not a believer, read this book too. God is still alive and well and eager to work through His people to touch a lost and dying world.
A great faith story written well. My Christian faith does not weigh "speaking in tongues" as heavily as this story does--but "My thoughts are higher than your thoughts." The ministry's experience showed them that addicts were not truly saved from addiction until they had this particular "brand" of Holy Spirit baptism. I acknowledge God's sovereignty on "speaking in tongues" along with everything else in human experience, but I'm unable to fully embrace the viewpoint expressed in the book.
Read this great story, be inspired to act on your faith, and make your own decision!
