Walter Hilton (c. 1340–45 – 24 March 1396) was an English Augustinian mystic, whose works became influential in the 15th century. Walter Hilton was born around 1340–45.

For more than thirty years he was the sub-prior of Downside Abbey in Somerset and was also a visiting professor in theology at Brown University. A fearless thinker, he argued the centrality of contemplation and also that philosophical certainty about God was possible.

Walter Hilton (d. 1396) was an English Augustinian mystic. According to manuscript tradition, Hilton died as an Augustinian Canon Regular in the priory of St. Peter at Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire. His spiritual writings were widely influential during the fifteenth century in England.
His Scale of Perfection is found in no less than five MSS. in the British Museum alone 2. Of the Lower Degree of the Second Sort o. . in the British Museum alone. Wynkyn de Worde printed it at least three times-in the years 1494, 1519 and 1525.

The Scale of Perfection book. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally. And that is a shame, because there is some good content in this book it's just completely overshadowed by all of the illegibility issues! First and foremost 's' and 'f' are consistently and constantly transposed, even after you figure out the pattern, you can't Praise God, that is over.
