In their book Ghosts of Borley (1973), Underwood and Paul Tabori wrote that they believed "some of the phenomena were genuine" at the Borley Rectory. According to Hall, the alleged paranormal phenomena from the rectory were the result of natural causes, such as noises produced by rats or flying bats, pranks by local village boys throwing stones at the house, or tramps trying to keep warm by lighting small fires in the rectory. This Haunted Isle: The Ghosts and Legends of Britain's Historic Buildings by. Peter Underwood. Haunted London by.
Ghost hunter Peter Underwood defined eight types of ghosts. Historical or Traditional Ghosts. Associated with old, historic houses and recognised as the shades of the people who once lived in the property; Underwood writes that these kinds of ghosts appear to be ‘perpetuated’ by a long and uninterrupted residence in the house. Sometimes they appear solid as they flit about the place in the same way they did whilst alive, and seem immune to structural alterations.
Ah, those were the days. Regardless, this is one of the books that started it all and Peter Underwood, in my opinion, is one of the World's most accomplished Ghost Hunters. Although not in print, this book is absolutely worth the money if you can find it from a used vendor. The techniques are valid and the advice comes from the proverbial "horse's mouth.
