Foreword by George Ritchie Doré Deverell's son Richard had a difficult life of physical and mental illness and depression. When he committed suicide at the age of thirty-six, Doré suffered the intense anguish of a mother's loss. But she was determined to find healing and reconciliation. This is her account of how she contacted Richard after his death. Through the work of Rudolf Steiner, she discovered ways to communicate with her son's spirit. She learned that those who commit suicide tend to experience great suffering and regret as a result of premature death. Doré was taught how to alleviate Richard's pain, and finally to transform it. These steps are described in an accessible way to help those who find themselves in a similar tragic situation. A gripping account of love, despair, death and resurrection. This a heartwarming confirmation of a spiritual reality-that, through the spirit, light overcomes dark. Illustrated.

A wonderful and inspiring work. Through desperation and darkness to light and knowledge, the path of a mother looking for a connection with her suicidal son.

This book gives the reader an experience of the reality that those who die simply divest themselves of their physical body and their consciousness remains. The great Theosophist, Charles Leadbeater puts it succinctly (edited)"The human being is a being of spirit and soul, and has a body. The body is not the human; it is only the clothing of the human. What we call death is the laying aside of a worn-out garment, and it is no more the end of the person than it is the end of us when we remove our overcoats. Therefore we have not lost our "dead" friends; we have only lost sight of the cloak in which we were accustomed to see them. The cloak is gone, but the person who wore it is not; surely it is the person that we love, and not the garment."
As I read Dore's agonising story I had a great sense of the eternal human being who incarnates in various times and places on its journey to perfection. This book speaks between the lines and the words. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to make sense of life after death and life before birth.

I see this book has been out for over a decade, but for some reason, despite being very attuned to the field, I had not come across it till recently.
As a practicing spiritualist and out of body traveler, I am very familiar with the various fates of spirits after their passing. The experience Dore Deverell describes is one of a tortured earthbound spirit who needs help. The spirit is that of her son, a suicide after many years of mental disability and depression.
As a student of the mystical teachings of Austrian Rudolf Steiner, her approach is the one outlined by him many decades ago,- reading to the dead. I'd always been somewhat mystified by this approach when I'd read of it decades ago, and have waited this long to see someone apply it. Ir seems to work, the spirit listens and learns and then moves on into the spirit realms proper. Other traditions, such as spiritualism, practice prayer and just sending love and light, and find that that works fairly well in most cases. On my out of body travels I will often debate with such stuck spirits, as some of them are quite intellectual and more than ready to argue that what they are experiencing is some kind of vivid dream created by a dying brain.
Whatever works I guess.
I would add that this reading method will only work if the spirit is well and truly stuck here, because once they move on even a little bit, there are plenty of libraries available, even on the lower planes, although if they are obsessed with lowlife habits like drugs booze sex and gambling, it can be a challenge to get them to stop what they consider "big fun" and start to learn the ropes about where they are.
All in all, a worthwhile read. Recommended, particularly for Rudolf Steiner fans.

This a good reading. Good, not great, not bad. Deverell's writing is clear and concise, and she keeps your attention. The only problem I have with this book is that there is too much emphasis on other books. She spends a great deal of time referring to other authors and experts in the field, and I would have enjoyed her spending more time on her own story.

Dore Deverell has written a remarkable book describing both her and her son Richard's transformtion and healing after he committed suicide. This book shows how, through diligence and faith, spiritual darkness can be transmuted into wisdom, energy and new life. An eloquent and straightforward narrative tells a story in two parts: a painful, oppressive life in suburban Los Angeles spanning decades, and, after a turning point coinciding with Richard's tragic death, a spiritual path, realized and fortified through anthroposophy, the modern wisdom and spiritual-scientific methods hearlded by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925).
