Harry’s heart for God and for people spills over on each page. Randy Alcorn Author of Heaven, Safely Home, and Deception. There is no shortage of books on divine grace, but this one is different. Kraus has resorted to a medical metaphor, which he uses especially well in an era when the public is obsessed with health and medicine

The Chairman was a great novel on several levels. The suspense of who done it and why was keep well a secret until near the end of the book. Second, the medical possibilities of spinal cord nerve regeneration and the hope of healing a quadriplegic was facinating. The third element was the question of Dr. Hannah of what are the physical requiements that make a life worth living. His daughter, Paige, challenged his thinking that wholeness of body was a need for a quality life. His patient, Nathzn, seems to have settled into life as a quadriplegic, moving forward with a new sense of purpose despite his physical limitations. Nathan's wife, Abby, works through her affair with Nathan's friend. There are many side stories developing into the conclusion the really had more cheering for the characters finding a new deeper life in Christ! A life of purpose and value because God loves us. That make any life "whole"!

Fans of medical suspense will enjoy this novel by Harry Kraus. Police officer Nathan McAllister faces life as a quadriplegic after a drug bust goes bad and he's hit by friendly fire from his buddy and fellow officer. He can't remember a thing about the incident, but what he's been told doesn't add up. And his wife seems less than excited to have him home. She's battling her own guilt over an affair with the man who shot her husband.
Dr. Ryan Hannah is on the verge of making medical history when his lab is broken into and the baboon at the center of his experiment is stolen. An uproar ensues over animal cruelty, and Dr. Hannah is forced to continue his research using human subjects. Nathan McAllister fits the bill perfectly. But the surgery puts Nathan and his wife at risk when the bullet lodged near his spine is removed--the bullet that will identify who shot him.
While some of the medical terminology went over my head, the book kept my attention throughout and I had a hard time putting it down. Harry Kraus is an excellent novelist who knows how to entertain his readers with memorable characters and engaging plots.

I really liked the variety of challenges covered in this book written by an obviously, very intelligent, well-educated writer. A glimpse into the world of physicians, researchers, the disable, and just ordinary people who face unique as well as typical struggles made this an interesting read. It was a good medical mystery book. The solution to unresolved struggles we face was well made by the author without preaching. It took a few pages to understand the author’s use of dialogue, quotation marks, and line placement. Why didn’t someone proof it to make it perfect? Oh—never mind. It is ok not to be perfect.

I was curious to see how Dr Kraus handled medical disability (spinal cord) in this read. My day job is in medicine--physical rehabilitation to be exact. Although I chafed at a few of the rehabilitation aspects of the book, most were on target. The cover itself was disturbing to me as the main character would not have used this type of chair. Perhaps the chair was used to signify the rehabilitation department in general (the "chairman" of the department). Nevertheless, it was a conflict for me.

If you are not interested in the specifics of spinal cord life, then do not read this book. It is nitty gritty. The psychosocial aspects are handled quite well.

Kraus always has a twist of mystery in his cocktail. Loved this one like I do all the rest.

This is a beautiful love story! It was so touching, I couldn't stop reading until I was finished. It's the story of a broken marriage, a broken body, and a doctor's journey to find peace. Most of all, it's about finding forgiveness, and faith, and the understanding that God's love is unconditional. Whether it's broken hearts or bodies, God will always have an answer, and He handles it His way.

i like that Dr Kraus writes in his field of experties. Also that he mixes in a strong plot with good characterisation and understanding of human nature. One of the best things about this book is the practical faith and Christianity that a biblical world view brings to the quanundrum of human suffering, especially that of the accident victim, who wakes up to find himself a quadraplegic.

Since I had read other books by Dr. Krauss, there was no doubt in my mind that I would enjoy this book immensely. I was not disappointed. The book covered real-life issues (infidelity, life from the perspective of a paraplegic, friends who disappoint, animal research, police corruption, the difficulties a Christian might face in trying to overcome their past, challenges doctors face in balancing work and home relationships, etc.), and showed that only God truly knows what each of us is going through. Great read!
This is the first book by Harry Kraus that I have read, and I am heading out to buy the rest. This book had me hooked from the beginning and kept me up most of the night so I could finish. The story revolves alternatively between a recent spinal injury patient trying to discover the facts relating to his injury (he has amnesia), and the chairman of neurosurgical department and his teenage daughter. Their stories eventually merge as you might imagine and each has a profound influence on the other's life. The storyline of a man and his wife trying to come to grips with a devastating injury and save their marriage is moving and realistic. You can not help but care deeply for these characters, and I was only disappointed at the end because it was over. I look forward to his next book, if it is half as good as this.
